Asking the farmer to go on his field
    #2839085 - 06/29/04 08:47 AM (18 years, 8 months ago)

Hey, can any of yall tell me some good reasons for asking a farmer to go on his field?(other than openly asking to pick mushrooms)I'm kinda stuck.

Man, at every field I've gone to I've either gotten yelled at, or passed the police on my way home.

I dont agree...

The main thing is to ask them first, so at least they can say no, or they can say, sure whatever. Just dont suprise them by getting caught in their feild when they dont know about it!

I've said numerous times that I am an aspiring mycologist, looking for various fungi in the area. I've used this probably 5 times, and 3 of the times, people have asked me questions about it, because they are also interested...So, be prepared and know what you are talking about. Find out which non-active species grow in the habitat as well, so you can tell them that you are looking for those and not for active species.

Dress nicely, bring a notepad and a camera. Look professional. Dont dress up like some drug addict hippy from San Francisco.

I agree with you. Only once have I been turned down.. and I have hunted over 20 horse/cow fields... I find horse owners are much nicer then the cow farmers... at least here in north atlanta... Just be open about it, something like:

hello sir/mam, as I was driving by your field, I coulden't help but notice some mushrooms growing by the fence, would you mind if I gathered them? Also, could I look in the rest of your field for any more mushrooms? I will not leave gates open and I respect your property, will be out of there in 10 minutes

this has been my exact words the last 3 places I went and they had no problem... just be nice, don't be stoned, and you will get in.

A friend of mine had an EXCELLENT idea. He was going to school at Georgia Southern U which is a notorious redneck/party school in these parts. It's down in south Georgia, so he thought up an excellent way to check fields.

He'd get a few friends together and have them bring their fishing poles and tackle boxes. They'd find a field that had a pond on the land(most do, so the cows can drink) then asked the owner of the property if he cared if him and a few friends fished in his pond. He said he only got turned down about 5 out of 20 times. His friends would fish, and he'd go scout the fields. Perfect plan!

If you're going planning on the going fishing deal, be sure to dress like a southern boy. No pericings/blackhair/manson shirts. Camo is always a plus, it adds to the southern look and makes your actions sound more believeable. Likewise, if you're a metrosexual, don't wear nice clothes to go fishing.

If you're in Georgia, wear any article of clothing that shows support for UGA or the Braves and I doubt you'll have any problems

GO DAWGS!  :smirk:

The fields I go to are a couple miles away from a nuclear power plant. So I usually just go the farmers house, dress all professional with a notepad, specimen jars and a fancy piece of prop equipement....I like to use my oscilloscope. I tell them I am an agent from the radiology branch of the govt's environmental department and wish to test your foilage for radioactive activity. I even have a fake ID I made off photoshop that has all sorts of professional logos. Its true, they usually are interested and start asking questions but then I just start makin up all these crazy rocketscience words like they use in star trek and after a few minutes, the farmer just has a complete confused expression. Thats my tek and its fun too...I like to have some fun and get shrooms at same time.

-ANd for that "should I bring a flashlight" question: the answer is NO!...unless it is completley foggy, the stars and moon give plenty of light to find shrooms. You wouldnt think it but they actualy kinda stick out. When a shroom hunter gets caught, its almost always because they are using a flashlight. If you want, you can bring a covered tiny little photon light to use when scrutinizing
shrooms but I still recommend avoiding them whenever possilble.

Peace, SillyWilly
