coprinus comatus that one looks a bit to big maybe not tho , just have to remove the inky parts, i cooked up a couple of those not long ago sauted in butter with a bit of the old pepper and salt.
the ones you want are smaller than that one, you will see that cap protruding from the substrate but you will not see the stem (like in your pic) and the gills will be totally white

I have some greats pics that look like those shrooms, found growing recently in a park in Melbourne in great abundance... some were more than 4 inches tall, and a lot shaggier than that one, growing in 'scatters'... I'll post the pics on this thread 'as soon as I'm old enough' (ie. 24 hours older/ tomozza, I've reached the limit for today!). {{subsequent' edit after looking back at my pics}} Methinks the ones I snapped are a different species in retrospect, based mostly on the stalk IC in your pic... the ones I found are more like pine-cones sticking out of the ground with no stalk, even the huge ones... the caps are v. similar/ though, they must be a close relative.

Wonder if these are shaggy manes too ... the first and 2nd pics might be different species, all the shrooms in pic 2 are the same species... found in a suburban park in Melbourne (Australia).

I cooked up some baby shags... following Shroomie and OOISI's advice I just ate some little ones (about 2 inches tall, no gills or stalks exposed), straight after picking... chopped them in half lengthwise and fried them pretty thoroughly in butter, garlic, pepper and salt. Best goddamn tasting shrooms I've ever eaten, no exaduration! I'm kinda rolling in magics at the moment, so now these guys are #1 on my hit-list !! AWESOME TASTE !! I want more !!

Hey all...
I am a newbie to the shroom scene but find it quite fascinating
There has been quite a lot of people talking about/harvesting "Gold tops" or subs as you guys call em? around Melbourne.. I spose its the perfect time/weather for them at the moment..
Anyway... I thought i'd have a little wander through my backyard tonight.. and sure enough, I came across a few clumps growing in some old woodpiles and stuff right down the end of my backyard..

As most of you in this thread are locals... could someone put a positive I.D on these things for me??
Oh.. and a couple of questions
Do 'gold tops' hate sunlight or any bright lights? Can they be picked any time? I heard it has to be really early morning.. these photos are from around 7pm tonight (light rain).
3. Whats the most common/best method of taking them? Eating them fresh off the ground, or dried out properly? Do you eat the stalk too?
Anyways... this site rocks.. great resource.
Cheers!

bwahaha oh damn..
yeah they sound like the ones.. i broke a few just trying to pick a couple... pretty small things too
what do "gold tops" look like compared to these? Bigger i spose? and more orange in colour?
The stalks on these things are thin and kinda transparent brown/red too..

Bob, Here's a couple of subby pics from Melbourne that I caught recently...
And re some of your questions... they can be found in totally unshaded areas/ don't 'hate' sunlight/ bright lights. They can be picked anytime. You can eat them fresh off the ground {{ONCE you're SURE what you're looking for}}, though some prefer to dry them because it decreases the volume, and the taste, that a lot of people find unpleasant. You eat the stalk too; the stalk is 'denser' flesh than the cap, as the cap is largely 'air', ie. in between the gills...
