damn, They have agar in safeway, and in LOTS of asian food stores (california has a high occurence of these) and they have the solidifying agent in there already. mmm, flavorless jello!
Perception is reality. Perception is also a function of the mind, which is intangible. so maybe I AM a mushroom!

Would this be the guy selling agar on Ebay recently? http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=567996769
Or is it just a coincidence that his email address uses the word "sonic" in it...
I need to know before I make a mistake if it is the same guy...
If it is not the same guy, do you think this is a good agar to purchase? I can purchase directly from this person.
Peace,
jat

---~Agar is an extract from seeweed that solidifies making a gell, it comes in a power form and you mix it with potatoes, dextrose, agar (PDA) Maltmix, dextrose, agar (MDA) and a super nutrient agerose mix of malt, dexterose, protein stuff, and agar (XPDA) You can make them all youself (way cheaper) or buy the powder for up to $150 for 500g. You just need agar

Malt extract with agar is an perfect medium for growing mycelium. It's not that easy to make as some of you are here pretending. Because you'll also need the MEA to be at pH 6.5-7.5. You can also order premade syringes with MEA. They come with a discription and are usefull for one petri-dish.
You can also order premade petri-dishes from a microbiological laboratory supplier in your country.

Or you can use other soldifiers!!
Agar agar is most commonly used in microbiological laboratories but there are others. It's just a way of keeping the liquid component water solid so mycelium can grow.
Try to buy agar agar, wich has no microbiological quality because than agar agar can cost less.
If I have found a page where to order cheap agar I will post it!
Try to buy premade petri-dishes they are more easy to handle!!

thanks very much for the replies.
yeah, i thought the agar agar was meant to solidyfy but for some reason this hasn't happened.
i made a batch with this agar and some malt eaxtract.
i have used this same agar agar before and haven't had any worries (as far as it solidifying goes) although i haven't used the malt extract before.
it's no big deal i'll make some more.............i'm bound to get it right ONE day.
thanks again for the responses.

I had some problems too, you should need 1 gram of agar agar with maltextract mixture with 15 grams of water for one petri-dish!! (most common). Sterilize the substrate, cool down until you can touch the agar (in the flask) with your cheek.
Pour it into a petri-dish (under sterile conditions) and let it become solid. After letting it become solid it is reccomended to let the PD's cooldown because there is still some moist coming out of the substrate wich can run to the lid and make droplets on the lid. After cooling down, I reccomend them to be placed in the fridge one ningt before inoculating it with a piece of shroom, spores, or other piece of mycelium!!

i think i found the problem.
over on 'mycotopia' hippie3 says in an agar recipie thread that
" it is possible to destroy completely the gelling properties of agar by prolonged heating,............"
that sounds like me.
