Mushroom ID
    #2723519 -

I'm new here so bear with me please. I've been reading around the site for a few days, and it got me interested in mushrooms. I don't really know anything about mushrooms, but i'm interested in learning. So today i went on my first mushroom hunt ever. I didn't have much luck, but i did find two that interested me.

First off...i'm from NJ..They were under a tree as you might be able to tell from the pic..
They have thick stems(not hollow), and white gills. The caps are about 1in across and the stems about 4in. The caps are a golden brown color, lighter around the edges. They also appear fibrous (if that means anything). I couldn't get a spore print as they didn't drop any spores. I didn't notice any smell in particular. I'm sorry i don't know the proper terminology, but like i said...i'm new to this.

I know i'm probably not giving you a lot to work with. I'm just looking for some help maybe identifying them. Don't worry, i'm not gonna eat them. I'm just looking to learn a bit.

Maybe white spores? You should try it on a black piece of paper next time. As far as an ID, I couldn't tell you but I'm sure one of our great mycologists here will tell you.

Mitchnast says:

if the print is rusty orange then its possibly a species of Conocybe (filaris) Galerina autumnalis, G. Marginata, G. venenata, all deadly species. And then it could be the edible honey shroom Arnellaria mellea.

I alsways inform people to avoid orange-cinnamon gill-colored shrooms as well as mushrooms with white gills.

Those are the ones with deadly shrooms in their bodies.

Stick to purple-crown, chocolate-brown and/or black mushroom gills and then you won't poison o yourself.

honey mushroom would have white gills. really doesnt look like a conocybe or galerina. but youre right of course. tho i reccommend against eating gymnopilus too.
i never implied it should be eaten.

Those really look like Omphalotus sp. mushrooms. The fact the the sporeprint was probably white confirms this. Mushrooms from the genus Omphalotus are all regarded as poisonous. Do not eat.
