Grace Slick
    #2722012 -

I don't know much about her, but i just found out that the same person who wrote White Rabbit went on to right "We built this City on Rock and Roll"

how can this be?
White Rabbit=a masterpiece, capturing the sole or the 60's psychedelic movement

We built this city=worst piece of shit ever made.

LOL I always wondered that too. What ever happened to her? I used to love Jefferson Airplane...haven't heard them for awhile though. It is weird the things that happen to musicians after their prime. Most of them anyway, some always stay in their prime or even get better and better .  Poor Gracie! AAARGH I've got to get off the shroomery,  it's addictive!

WHITE RABBIT -- Jefferson Airplane
One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all
Go ask Alice
When she's ten feet tall

And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall
Tell 'em a hookah smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call
Call Alice
When she was just small

When men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving low
Go ask Alice
I think she'll know

When logic and proportion
Have fallen sloppy dead
And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen's "off with her head!"
Remember what the dormouse said:
"Feed your head
Feed your head
Feed your head"

I think it's mostly a matter of she had her prime, but it ended. It's amazing how many musicians actually have a really short period of creative brilliance, and then the rest of their careers sort of suck. Especially, in "pop music."

There are a few exceptions to this, but they really stand out. I think Neil Young and Tom Waits, for example, have both had remarkable careers, and actually continue to write material that is just as challenging and as brilliant as when they first started. Sure they've had their "clunkers," but the arc of their careers has been pretty strong, and in many ways their music has stayed honest and become more mature. However, this is sadly not the fate of most popular musicians.

PS: Grace Slick wrote "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love" for her first band, The Great Society, which often played at a S.F. club called the Matrix with the Jefferson Airplane. When she came onboard with the Airplane, she brought those two songs with her, and they became big hits.

The Airplane's lead guitar player, Jorma Kaukonen, came up with the name Jefferson Airplane as a parody of blues musician's names (e.g. Blind Lemon Jefferson Airplane), and he took the name with him when he and Jack Cassady left to pursue Hot Tuna. So, Paul Kantner kind a took over and renamed the remaining group the Jefferson Starship, and things sort of slid downhill after that. Jorma and Jack were an important part of the Airplane's soul, and when they left... :frown:

However, that being said, the actual Jefferson Airplane was, and still is, one of my favorite groups. They were extremely good for a few years!

Read my post. I'm not such a big fan of the Jefferson Starship. They had a couple of good songs in the mid-seventies, but they're mostly nostalgia pieces for me, that remind me of my youth -- back when those songs were getting radio airplay.

The very first Jefferson Starship album was interesting, but it was very similar to some of those collaborative solo projects at the time like, "Baron von Tollbooth and the Chrome Nun." It was definitely a Kantner project, and had his finger prints all over it.

That later incarnation, around 1980, which was just simply labeled, "Starship," was atrocious and a mockery. It was a mockery of a sham...

IMO, Grace Slick bought into the idea that the sixties psychedelic movement "didn?t work" and that the people who believed in it were naive. I?ve heard her speak of the sixties. She talks about it as if it was ridiculous that people could really change the world through psychedelics.

Though things didn?t turn out the way the "hippies" had hoped, it wasn?t because psychedelic drugs can?t change the world. It?s because the government destroyed the movement through law and propaganda. Grace Slick bought into the idea that "it didn?t work" and that "it was time to move on". So she moved on alright. She moved on to making soulless, edgeless corporate pop shlock.

I think MOST peace movement icons lost their way to some degree. John Lennon even denounced Timothy Leary and LSD later in his life. Grace Slick just happened to lose her way COMPLETELY.  :nonono: That won?t stop me from listening to Great Society and Airplane albums, and looking back at a time when she had her head on straight.

Yeah, that and a couple of others, but the original Jefferson Airplane was a great band. Unfortunately, it was too many massive egos to have together in one group. I'm surprized that they lasted for the 5-6 years that they did. I saw the full-reunion tour back in '89 (?), and it was a magical show -- at the greek Theater in Berkeley, in opern-air, with those giant columns and the lights of San Francisco as a backdrop -- but damn they never stopped fighting amongst themselves.

I remember, after the acoustic Hot Tuna set, at intermission, Jorma introduced Grace as, "Grace Mother-Fucking Slick." I think Berkeley was the second stop in their Reunion World Tour, and I believe they broke up again right after that gig, and cancelled the tour. It was fun to see the whole group together again though.

That show was quite a contrast to the Love & Rockets show we saw at the Greek several weeks before. That show was all goth and everyone was dressed in black, but for the Airplane show everyone was all rainbow colored -- sort of like a Dead show, but without the same great vibe.

I wouldn't say The Great Society was better than Airplane. Very good, but I like Airplane better.

Both GS and JA did great versions of "White Rabbit". Airplane's sounded the best, but Great Society did a LONG version of it, which is how it should have been. I can't believe Jefferson Airplane made that song so damn short. Especially in an era in which everyone was doing 17 minute songs right and left.

In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said, "Is it good, friend?"
"It is bitter, bitter," he answered;
"But I like it
Because it is bitter,
And because it is my heart."
