There's not many of them here, but i'm one of them.

I have "Surrealistic Pillow", "After Bathing At Baxters" and The Great Society's "Live At The Matrix".

My man AislingGheal was nice enough to send me the last two of those. He even sent me his original copy of "After Bathing..."!

Here are two other threads that I can remember starting about The Jefferson Airplane.

I like them they are a good band. I've read alot of good stories about them and the Dead back in the haight-ashbury day's they had alot of fun together and were very good friends. I guess Garcia was in the studio while recording surrealistic pillow and he actually named it that after hearing a song and describing as sounding as 'surrealistic as a pillow' and the airplane decided thats it.(Read that in Dennis McNally's "A Long Strange Trip")

I'm definitely a fan of the Airplane. My first album of theirs and still my favorite is Surrealistic Pillow. I remember figuring out "Today" on guitar when I was 17, I used to love playing that song. Learyfan turned me on to The Great Society and I've been listening to that over the last week, anyone who likes Jefferson Airplane should pick Collector's Item, it's really good.

I only have surrealistic pillow, and I really like it so i guess that makes me a fan. I'm infatuated with Grace Slick. She's kind of like the perfect mix between a girly hippy and one of those biker chicks...and an amazing vocalist to boot.

I'm a jefferson airplane fan. You probably won't believe this but my dad was the first person to ever smoke hashish with jack cassidy. My dad was 15 at the time and was at a rock club in california when he saw jack cassidy at the bar. Being it was the 60's and people were cooler back then, my dad sat down at the bar and ordered a drink. He asked if cassidy wanted to smoke with him and he said sure. My dad pulled out a homemade pipe and a chunk of hash and packed the bowl. Cassidy had never seen hash before and asked what it was my dad was smoking. My dad told him it was hash, pressed resin glands from cannabis. Well jack cassidy said "cool" and hit the pipe after my dad. Thats probably the most interesting drug related story my dad has told me. And no, my dad isnt some drugged out bum who makes up bullshit stories to impress his kids.

glimmi,
You got one here too! I've always loved them. I have the 2400 fulton street double CD. Excellent!
I always had a weakness for Grace Slick myself  :smirk:. Their music is one of a kind.

Like so many others (a couple others, anyhow) I only have Surrealistic Pillow, and I haven't listened to much other than what's on that album, but yes, I like it.

haha, I wanted to quote some cool lyric and all I'm thinking of is "plastic fantastic lover" ... meh, that's good enough.

Thats really fucking cool Hot Tuna is fucking awesome.Wish i could see them.Jefferson Airplane was great but my question is now why did they have to degrade into the really shitty 80's band Starship????? I mean jefferson starship was ok not like The Airpalne but they were ok.But i mean Starship just plain sucked.

The Airplane in their prime were motivated by the tri axis of Balin-Kaukonen/Cassidy-Slick/Kantner these were not exactly harmonius juxtapositions of shared musical vision(s)........once these polarized forces were eliminated you had the more "commercial" aspect of the Airplane emerging minus the Kaukonen/Cassidy factor.....what this all means though at 4:00am Toronto time is beyond me

i think that was the 3rd major Slick/Kantner collaboration Ripple("Blows against the Empire" and "Sunfighter" being the first two) i "think" the album to which you are referring is Baron Von Toll Brook(booth?) and the Chrome nun"

The first concert I ever went to was a Jefferson Starship show at an auditorium by my house up in Central Wisconsin. Like, 100 people there maybe? Me and all my friends were 14 or so, and they bought us beers...It was very cool. My old girlfriend still has a signed Bra someplace...

The Airplane is the best 60's Sanf ransico Band Besides the dead, And Hot Tuna I like even better. Jorma's guitar playing is one of a kind. The Starship Played here in the 80's and Sucked major ass. Maybey they just quite tripping, that would explain enough for me.

i gotta say something here RE The Starship(1975 and beyond). As much as disliked what remained of the Airplane's commercialized pap, times change and so do people. Paul Kantner said in a 1975 issue of high times that he and Grace had long since stopped doing acid and had focused(more on less) on doing coke.

Also consider that the Airplane's own private record label was an unmitigated financial disaster/ monetary suck pit from day one and ate away at whatever resources they may have squirreled away for their new form of recreational drug use. The Airplane simply did not possess the GR8ful Dead's business savvy when it came to operation a profitable commercial enterprise(Grunt records)...and who amongst us older people can ever forget that wonder album "Bark" with it's...um.......unique packaging lol.

Even though the Airplane were one of my favorite bands back then i didn't even notice that the kaukonen/Cassidy-Slick/kantner tandems had squeezed Marty out like an unwanted zit.....Marty did reunite with Grace and Paul for 1975's "Red Octupus" but it was clear that the times, and the Airplane had changed.

.... Martty Balin was always the romanticist of the band, Grace and Paul were it's idealistic faction, and Jorma and Jack just wanted to jam, hence the reason for the formation of Hot tuna which in itself may have been the harbinger signialing the iminant demise of the once GR8 and musically eclectic Airplane

In closing, i'd like to say The Starship sucked bigtime imo, but i thought it might be fair to the Airplane and all the GR8 memories i have of them to consider some of the possible reasons for their choice of musical direction and to show it in perhaps a somewhat more compassionate light....

Peace
Freak

Starships really bad realyl really abd everytime i hear about starship oone of there song i want to throw up it makes me sick.:

LOL! Apparently Jorma Kaukonen felt exactly the same way, he HATED playing Marty's sappy(to some) romantic ballads. In fact when the Airplane toured in support of their Fulton street album he would insist that his brother Peter(it may have been Craig Chaquico though, not positive) perform the guitar function....the only real mystery about the Airplane is how they managed to stay together as long as they did with the Kanter/Slick-Kaukonen/Cassidy- Marty Balin tri axis causing an extrme field of tensions which may have been why they were such an amazing band in the first place
