How about that VA flip? Impossible to call this shit right now.

Same thing could happen in some other states that are more purple (and some that are historically more red) than VA.

...the details you left out - (1) only framing the communist Afghan ruling party in light of their progressive reforms without mentioning the brutal repression that also resulted; and (2) not mentioning that when internal Afghan politics resulted in the removal and replacement of Taraki as president, Soviet military forces invaded Kabul and assinated Amin before replacing him with a new pro-Soviet president - provide highly relevant context.

Both of these statements are true:

"When the ruling party of Afghanistan tried to introduce Western reforms to Afghanistan, [...] The Mujahideen didn't like the reforms and started a civil war.  The Afghan Government sought help from the Soviet Union."

"After a bloodless coup, the new ruling party of Afghanistan tried to introduce Western reforms to Afghanistan using brutal means, [...] The Mujahideen didn't like the reforms and started a civil war.  The Afghan"Government sought help from the Soviet Union, but when Afghan-Soviet government relations began to deteriorate, a Russian military coup reinstalled a new pro-Soviet Afghan president."

But only with your depiction can you claim that "there was no invasion" - adding the missing context makes such a claim obviously false. Шторм-333 was a Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

Whether Amin was in power because of a democratic vote or violent coup, it doesn't change my conclusion that Шторм-333 was a Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. The Afghan government didn't ask for Soviet forces to attack their national army and president.

Now we're having a good discussion - thanks.  Though I disagree with much of what you just said.

First of all, there will be blood during a civil war.  I wouldn't necessarily call it "brutal repression"; you could also call it defending your own side (see Syrian civil war).  I realize this is semantics, and if you're for the Mujahideen you'll call it brutal repression, if you're for the progressive Government you'll call it self defense.  I'm not sure what a good neutral term would be.

Secondly, I think a discussion of Taraki and Amin is HIGHLY relevant to this topic.  Amin got his higher education in the United States and was believed to be working with the CIA, so when Amin killed Taraki to take power, that was a big concern for Russia.  Plus, he was more brutal than Taraki.

With that said, I can understand your point that the Russian Assault of Amin's Palace might be considered a Russian invasion, but I think that's a stretch because the he Afghan Government was already socialist/communist; Soviet interference might be a better term here?

Anyway, good discussion.

I am in a minority on the shroomery, as I frequently defend the opposing side when they have a point about something or when my side make believes something about them.  I also attack my side if I think they're wrong.  People here get very confused by that and think it means I prefer the other side.

Online casinos currently give Trump a 55% chance of winning (this number may change).

Trump won and I called it months back. :shirtlesssoldier:

I was also right about the polls being off, and I was probably even right by the specific amount that the polls were off. :dealwithit:

Rooting for Biden but I'll admit that Trump has almost certainly won the election. Messing around with electoral college maps, there are fewer paths to victory for Biden than for Trump. Even if Biden gets all of the states currently leaning in his direction, he needs to flip 3 of the Trump-leaning states of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Carolina and Georgia. It's certainly a possibility but an unlikely one.

You have no clue what you're even talking about  My state has run mail in voting for decades and has had no fraud and is ranked the #1 easiest and most secure state to vote in... it's the other states like florida and penn that have all these fucking confusing and fraudulent methods like electronic voting machines and ballot machines that fuck everything up.

You think you can just fuck with the mail in votes - but the drop boxes are monitored by police & they're sturdy steel boxes that are riveted into the ground. I don't know what kind of shit you guys are imagining.

I really don't care, but if Trump wins Michigan and Wisconsin handily (which he would), then the race is indeterminable for the time being.

I can't wait to move out of here. Both options suck, so I didn't vote. I keep noticing that people tell me that every election is the most important in my lifetime and I have to vote, but no matter who wins the presidency, the public still loses

I care to wager quite a bit of money that neither candidate will do anything for the average citizen

Yep Oregon has consistently been ranked the #1 easiest and most secure place to vote. And it's done all with mail-in ballots for 20+ years.

Funnily it's the regressive, voter disenfranchisement states that seem to be deciding the election  Time to form our own autonomous enclave!
