Hey, thanks for all of the replies!

Shroomzilla: The spores came from The Hawk's Eye.

McMan: Good to see you, man. My setup was a glass aquarium, wet perlite was the humidity source, air exchange was done manually, and an air pump was used every now and then for fresh air supplements.

Cow Shit Collector: The trick is, no matter what setup you use, air must be changed. When CO2 builds up in the grow chamber, it ends up settling on the casing layer. Stagnant air is a breeding ground for contaminants. Essentially, patience and careful handling is the key to healthy casings.

Some new growers (and some experienced folks) are prone to jumping to conclusions about the progress of their substrate, casing, or what have you. As such, they tend to overmist the casing and get it all wet. Or, they let it get too dry in hopes of not getting it too wet. I say, let things take their course.

Only through experience and a few painful mistakes could I judge the humidity needs of my terrarium, the moisture requirements of my particular casing depth, and what to expect growth-wise from the genetics I was working with. And I do this each time without gauges or instruments.

Here are a few hints to keep casings healthy:

1. Before breaking the seal on your grow chamber, grab your spray bottle. Stand still in front of the chamber, and spray the air above, around, and below the chamber. Keep still. Let the mist settle. This can improve your chances of getting airbornes down to the floor. Some fancy scientists asperate oil into the air so the droplets grab contams and pull them out of the air. I believe patience with the spray bottle can do the same.

2. If you fan your chamber to change the air, that's fine. When you do, make sure to fan around the tray or whatever your casing is in. Then, make extra sure to heavily fan the casing layer. Get as close as you can, but don't go nuts, and DON'T TOUCH the casing. This will make sure you've gotten rid of the CO2 sitting on the casing.

3. After you're done fanning out the air, I might suggest spraying the inner walls of the grow chamber just to get the humidity back up quickly. But DON'T OVERDO IT. The wet perlite (if that's your game) will do the work from there.

4. Common sense: Don't fuck with the casing or the tray it's in. The less you open your chamber up, the less likely you are to have to throw away a tray of melted toothpaste that turns frosty green the next day.
