Cuzco or Peruvianus?
    #26814851 - 07/10/20 11:02 AM (3 years, 6 months ago)

One of my friends was sold this peruvianus a while back and now he’s questioning if its cuzcoensis. I told him I thought it was peruvianus but now im second guessing myself. It doesn’t look like a typical cuzco to me but i did notice some of the lower spines have a central spine thats a little knobby towards the base. What do y’all think?

At first glance it looks Peruvianus, but I see why you are questioning it.

I would expect the areoles to be larger and to have more of an upward facing orientation with more prominent V-notching if it were a pure Peru.  But it doesn't really look very Cuzco either.  Could it be a hybrid with some other species, like maybe Bridgesii?  Hard to say for sure what it is exactly.

I have a couple of plants that were sold to me as Peruvianus, but that look like they definitely have Cuzco genetics mixed in.  I've heard of Peruvianus - Cuzcoensis hybrids referred to as Peruzcos.  That's a pretty good name for them.  I'm pretty sure thats what some of my Perus actually are.

Tough call, but I'm leaning more toward cuzco. I'm interested what some of the experts think

It’s definitely not a typical Cuzco if it is but I’m with grey fox on this one. It could possibly be a hybrid of some sort, I can dig the Peruzco name lol even in nature there are many intermediates between peruvianus and  cuzcoensis so peruzco is fitting.
