WBS too wet.....
    #2658740 -

Ive been having problems with my WBS bieng to wet for mycilium too colonize. I have been soaking overnight then draining....

Now i want to measure the water content directally as to have better control of the water ratio in my jars...

I just cant seem to find a ratio anywhere! I know Pf jars use 1 part water to 3 parts substrate....would this be good for WBS jars?

I know a guy who rinses the WBS, removes sunflower seeds, drains, then fills the jars halfway. He then eyes out water to about 2/3 the height of the WBS. After a couple times, you will adjust accordingly and be able to eye it almost perfectly. There is a WBS tek on shroomery that has pictures showing the level desired.

Ratios can help... but if you soak and drain... I don't think moisture is a problem... perhaps your jars are too full... or you aren't covering them with tinfoil when you PC.

I do cover with tin foil, and tyvek....also there about 1/2-2/3 full....i strained for half an hour....mycilium is growing, but its a sludgey mess, and i doubt it will colonize all the way....

FunkyBudah....where is that tek, i looked but nont had a water ratio...they all said to soak....

That is weird... ratio cooking with wbs causes me all kinds of problems but soaking works well.

That is the thing with grains, different teks work well with different people... and there is usually a good bit of trial and error involved.

Good luck... and be prepared for a few imperfect batches, until you get your tek down, I suggest you conserve your most valuable spores.

You may want to consider the karo water trick to conserve your spores also.

i dont know if its the best way, but i boil the wbs till the first seeds start to burst then drain and fill the jars half way. this has been working for me and i dont need to worry about wbs/water ratios. anyhoo, good luck. i love this website.

i agree with cervantes,i just soak over night then drain then i use filters/ lids then 3 layers of tinfoil,i also tape the innoc holes with electrical tape then pc em

That way works also. I know a guy who used to do it that way, until he tried the no soak way. He says they both work great. It just is nice to cut the 12-24 hour soak out of the process.

I just rinse the wbs, then soak overnight, then rinse again, then simmer for 30 minutes(medium low),then as soon as it is done,I dump it in a strainer(HOT!!!)and rinse it cool, then let strain for 20 minutes, then load into jars and pc for 60-90 minutes at 15psi!

;bump

I've been having this same problem.
What I am planning on doing this time around is cooking the WBS until they begin to explode, load into jars 2/3 full, and PC.
I don't need any extra water once they are maxed out from the boil right?

You don't want alot of exploded kernels of grain, you just want to get them to hold as much water as possible without exploding.
Once you have simmered them they will need no more water, but if you simmer them to the point of exploded kernels, then when you pc,they will almost all be exploded.I'm just assuming this.I haven't done it.I haven't had a moisture problem unless I didn't simmer.
