Exploded WBS?
    #4055623 - 04/14/05 06:21 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

I just simmered my WBS for 40min. It definetly got a lot bigger and is now draining. I looked at my kernals now and a lot of them look like the shells are cracked open. They aren't like completly exploded and not round, but they are mostly busted open and big. Is this bad, or will it still work well?

Its on the edge, ho long do you soak? 40 minutes simmer, of WBS, is overdone anyway, imho.

Since WBS isnt that expensive I would say try another batch. Soak 18 hours simmer 10 minutes. Drain well.

I never had good results with mushy grains.
If only SOME of the seeds are exploded you could be fine, if its more then 50% id say toss it,

MF

well i talked to diver a little earlier and he said i could just simmer 30-45 min with no soak. I didn't have time to soak, because i only had a 4 hour time period today to PC the jars. I didn't know before today, so didn't soak last night. That's why i simmered so long.

They aren't that mushy really. They still feel solid, unless i squeeze them decently hard.

you can either use it and see what happens or throw it out...

It would probly work but at a slower rate.

they're done PC'ing and they look pretty good. There are quite a few busted ones though. I think ill give em a try. I dont care if it takes 3 weeks to colonize them.

i have heard of grains going to mush after simmer for about an hr but it was only in one jar and afoaf saw that a few were smashed up ageinst the jar and shook as hard as he could and most were unstuck but still sticky looking and mushy still colenized i think that with rye its good to have them open becouse i think the inside soft part is tastey to the myc i am unsure if the wbs has this same white softness on the inside of them

Its fine. I'd have added some verm while straining (check my Grain link in my sig) but the corn in WBS gets mushy after 40 minutes, makes the whole thing look mushy...look at the millet though, the little white and red balls. Those should be swollen but not to bursting yet. Even if they do, it often works out fine with some verm in there. May be to late now though depending on how far along you are in the process? Good luck either way!

Yeah too late for the verm. Hopefully im ok still though. All the seed is still held together, and i can shake it easily in the jars. It was a little mushy, buy not horrible. Most the kernals were popped though.

What was the benefit of adding the verm. anyway?

As long as they still look good in a couple days, then im going to inoculated them with some Golden Teacher spores.

It helps balance out moisture mistakes. When the grains dont shake easily and clump, usually they're all gooey...adding verm helps it soaking up the goo. Hard to explain really. Helps hold extra water and give a nice fluffy texture and helps the grains break up easier once fully colonized. But if you can easily shake the jars and the kernals shake, then you are good to go...long as its not a gooey mess.

Ok I c, I have no experience with that. Only simmer. And then PC.
Still it is a bad thing if your exploded kernals are too many.

My best results are with taking 100 gram Rye, 105-110 gram Water, load in jars.
PC, cool down, inoculate.
No soak, no simmer. Only PC.
