Here is a tub that was harvested a few weeks back.  Have 2 more colonizing now, should be pinning in the next week or so.  Pretty much set and forget.  Had some issues with condensation dripping from the lid so I dropped the water content in the sub a bit for this round.

Low water content is stated in the OP... These dont really need liners either guys: counterintuitive to self maintenance

What are the downsides to using a liner  besides not being able to see the sub colonizing?

The condensation runs down the sides BEHIND and UNDER the liner, instead of reabsorbed by the sub and preventing drying issues late flush... This also creates pools of standing water in low oxygen conditions RIPE for the development of bacteria... depending on your initial moisture content, might help: but following the tek with 2qt/brick,  I ended up with dry centers that would late abort in some (with liners)

I've done quite a bit of research (playing) to narrow the tek to MY CONDITIONS... and though I've run a few hundred tubs like these, all have been in MY CONDITIONS... That said, you may very well find you need the excess moisture initially and to use a liner for best results... (doubtful, but never know)

Whats the advantage of using one? Habit? Outdated info about light/side pins?

Eliminating the microclimate between the tub and sub as it shrinks.  Only having a few tubs under my belt I lack the expertise some folks on this site have when it comes to surface conditions. Anything I can do to reduce side pins is a plus in my book.

Less water=less shrinking

Tamp the edges and relevel from center...

It's all one big trial and error experience: love it

Properly set up, I dont touch them until harvest: no "maintenance" or "surface conditions " to worry with

Tub pictured was 650gs of eco earth,2 quarts verm and 2.5 quarts water.  I struggled to get drips from a fistful using kung fu grip.  I'll try less next time.

Yeah, I'm finding that even 1.5qt/brick can still produce puddles with certain cultures... figuring it out is the fun part

You'll notice no side pins, despite having a fairly substantial gap: this is bc with less water initially shrinking doesn't start occurring until after fruit begin to mature and draw water: at which point it's fruiting, not pinning...  you'll also notice little to no surface moisture:  never misted... not as important as you've read, and likely the cause if sidepins in most cases imo

If I use a liner it’s always clear, not being able to see is unacceptable.

The main reason I like liners is the ability to easily pull the entire sub out to harvest, and no clean up.

Question for you guys that have done normal shoes and these.

Do you notice a difference in fruit size?? I’ve done a bunch of regular shoeboxes and only had a handful of large mushrooms show up, large meaning like drying to over 1.25 grams. Even running multiple flushes.

More surface area means more chances for big mush, but it's mainly genetics and growing conditions. Bacterial spawn, too wet substrate, bad surface conditions, all of those things make mush smaller.

For me I have equally large mush in shoeboxes or monos, although my largest fruit so far came from a SOS.

Shit, there's another point I just learned after doing this almost a year. I've just been tamping the edges, didn't know about re-leveling. Do you re-level AND re-tamp?

These are short enough to harvest in place without much trouble... can be finagled out with the lid: with or without filling the tub with water... count thus as rehydration though and only do a light surface mist a few days post harvest

Fewer larger fruit indicates excess moisture imo... Surface conditions are off, so you're not getting heavy pinset, but there's enough moisture to push the flush, so you get big fruit... likely the yield in either case is comparable; just a matter of conditions... drier is better,  and as previously pointed out,  nearly a requirement for these as they hold water well

Tamping makes the edges a little more difficult to colonize, and takes a bit of shrinking out of the equation due to simple compaction/displacement... notably,  I leave the releveled sub as unpacked as possible, while maintaining levelness...  top layering at spawn is a fairly easy way to maintain Rh just below the surface, and help with more even pinset... LOT less water needed to grow mushrooms than youd think: they grow open air in nature

Great illustration that too thick a top layer (far side) can delay pinning:

How thick was it on that side??

Im about a week away from spawning one of these so I’m reading up. I’ve got normal shoeboxes down so I’m figuring this is a good next step.

Roughly 3/8": typically shoot for a 1/4"

Bootbox would be "the next step" lol: these are basically full size substrates with half-height unmodified monotub: basically, they have the same footprint (length and width dimensions) of most 70qt tubs

lol yeah but bootboxes aren’t much bigger, I’m going big now that I’ve got agar and good spawn lol.
