Boards of Canada - Question for fans.
    #2640244 - 05/05/04 03:21 AM (19 years, 11 months ago)

Which track was the first one you ever heard, and how would you describe what you thought of it while hearing it?

Mine was "happy cycling".

I remember thinking "i've never heard music like this before, its so differend then what i know as standard". It filled me with peace, love and respect. Shortly after that i gathered all the stuff i could find of them, but i'm still sure there must be one outthere is didn't hear yet.

Respect to the Boards of Canada guys!

Ooo!! B.o.c.! Dont even get me started...

First one I heard was Julie and Candy.
After that, i got some mp3's and was so very impressed with those that I now own 3 of their albums on vinyl and have been on a search to find the ones I dont have.

Boc is definetly one of my top 3 favorite musical groups/artists.

(First about the mp3 in your sig, it sounds like the ending part of a song combined with a reverse played record. But its very nice.)

Julie and Candy holds a lot of feeling as well. I can understand this would be a good intro to BOC as well. Can you describe the feeling it gave you?

Um well...
At the time, there were 5 people in swims house. 1 on yaje, 2 on a combo of maoi's and 5-meo-dipt, then swim and one other on about 40 milligrams of 2c-i.

The track came on (internet radio) during this moment when they were all sitting in a circle just kinda flowing whichever direction the experience wanted to take them. The track carried them to this awesome space where they felt like they were in the happy ending of a really far out story or something. It was super!

Some Boc really stuck to me. I frequently hear them in my dreams.

Oh! The mp3 in my sig:
It's a track called times fly (slow) by orbital, but you probably already knew that:grin:
Orbital also has a lot of really beautifully crafted stuff, and im sure I havent even heard half of it.

We need a BoC forum so we can all dribble about them without pissing off other folk.

My first BoC tune was Aquarius. First record I bought was "In A Beautiful Place Out in the Country" when it first came out; I've got all the ones on major release now. They recently re-released Twoism and Scam, well worth checking out. Quite pricey though for EPs.

I think I heard Turquoise Hexagon Sun first. I was in my mood of gathering as much downtempo music as I could, and was paying a great deal of attention to somafm.
I felt very intrigued, the soft voice toward the beginning, the mysterious quality... Then I got Aquarius and it felt so familiar.  Like something I had heard as a child or something, but with a kick ass beat.  Hey they're counting! that's pretty cool, wait, that's not in order! Why'd they do that...make me get used to something and then screw with my head?

Thus, that last statement set me off on my journey to discover more BoC and delve deeper into each track.
First tune off of Geogaddi I heard was Julie and Candy, misplaced on an UltraChilled CD... cool track, just didn't belong there.  That track has such a thick texture, something else could be sounding and you wouldn't even know it.

I've got every major release, plus all those demo tracks floating around on slsk

Can't remember. Don't think there was any majorly emotive feeling, other than "that's damn good...need more". But after listening to them properly, especially when high, BoC makes me feel very nostalgic for times/places in the past, that I loved but I know I'll never visit/experience again. Not just childhood either, relatively recent things too. So kind of happy/sad I guess. Sounds like laughing through tears. Maybe nostalgic's the wrong word, that makes it sound a bit...wrong.

Other music does this too. BoC's especially adept at it though.

Sunshine Recorder was the first song I heard by them..After realizing I loved it, I downloaded a few more songs but ended up ordering Music has the right.. & picked up Geogaddi a few days later. I love both these albums..

When I first heard Sunshine Recorder, I couldn't really tell what I thought about it, it was so..different..yet it was put together in such an interesting way. I would feel almost drawn to it. It didn't take very many listens for me to catch on to its brilliance. Definitely still one of my favorites.

Hmm EVERY MAJOR RELEASE?? Interesting..  :smirk:

Wish i had it as well...

Thanks to everyone so far for responding with the huge load of feedback.
As you can see we are slowly building a picture about how the firsttime BOC experience is for everyone in general. We could start a BOC forum somewhere..

"In A Beautiful Place Out in the Country"
It was so soothing, beautiful... and like all BoC brought childhood flashbacks
