Actually, that is not an outrageous price. The non-ultra version is $299, which is very decent for an MSRP.
Heck, you can pay $400 now for an ATI 9800XT for half the performance!

and its 3x the performance of the 9800 xt!!
I'm glad Nvidia is upping the bar by such a large margin. Instead small, expensive, performance jumps of cards. I'm sure this will shiver ATI's timbers that is until they come out with somthing better soon after. THAT will be expensive.
Overall these cards are great and the detail level in the demos. OMG!!!

The first impression one gets when observing these new cards is why are the fans blowing into the case, rather outside? I pondered this with a friend for a few moments and came to a few, decisive conclusions:
1. Because all cases are not created similarly, there would be an obvious gap if the heatsink and fan pointed to blow outside the case (airflow directed towards the input). This would create commotion as there would be a gap in the case.
But then you ask, look at the Nvidia 5950, they just put a frame over the card so the air would be directed outwards!
2. Correct, but notice how extremely large the 6800 heatsink is compared to the 5950. It would not fit.

Update! http://www.anandtech.com/news/shownews.html?i=22183 Nvidia reconsiders its 480W PSU recommendation for 6800-series NVIDIA Corporation said it seriously reconsidered the recommendations about power supply units for computers with its latest high-end product called the GeForce 6800 Ultra and derivatives. The company told that 480 PSU are not compulsory for such PCs. Originally NVIDIA Corp. recommended to use a 480W power supply units for use with its recently announced graphics processors GeForce 6800 Ultra in order to ensure maximum stability and reliability. However, it turned out that the requirement is not compulsory. "When we initially specified out the power supply requirements for the GeForce 6800 Ultra we made an error on the conservative side. The reason is that this is an Enthusiast class product, and enthusiast users tend to max out their system configurations with the fastest CPU, lots of peripherals, etc. The original 480W power supply specification was targeted at these users. This spec gives them the power they need for their other system components, while also enabling overclocking headroom," NVIDIA's spokesperson Luciano Alibrandi told X-bit labs.

Don't ignore ATI's new chip guys, it isn't only about NVIDIA.

Nvidia reconsiders its 480W PSU recommendation for 6800-series
What do you want from a 222 million transistor GPU ? I wonder how many good wafers will come out from the fabs.... The big downer of all the nvidia tactics is they are producing a very costly card, aimed at a technology (VS/PS 3.0) only implemented in the far future. When DX 9.0c comes out, which will support VS/PS 3.0, a new wave of hardware will be ready to make its entrance, meanwhile nvidia will have had higher costs producing the 6800 series. That's why ATI is choosing to make a more affordable DX 9.0b card with much less transistor count. Nvidia position is even more weakened when we know from several reviews that ATI cards are faster on most tests. The 6800 Ultra is indeed an impressive video card but its capabilities will have to wait for new tech software tittles using such technology. When such tittles arrive, ATI will introduce its R480 supporting the new features. Well, only time will tell but i see ATI tactics as much more intelligent....

I'll post some reviews later showing that the ATI X800Pro's 12 pixel pipelines is superior to the 16 pixel PL's of the 6800. There are many reviews showing ATI is performing better than Nvidia. Then again, Nvidia has been notorious for overclocking, so we'll see. Also, ATI X800Plat. Ed. has 16 pixel pipelines. ATI uses old technology while Nvidia is using new, albeit fledgling, technology (SmartShader v3.0). Addendum: Rumors have it that 6800 was merely a prototype for the 6900. Who knows.
