any better alternative than McCafee ultra deluxe??
    #2913290 -

I just want something that'll automatically check anything I download for a virus. I have McAfee thinger and it automatically made the windows loading time like an extra 20 seconds and puts like 5 additional processes running in the background. I feel like that must be more than I need. Anything out there more specialized to what I want?

NOD 32 is without a doubt the best and fastest anti-virus program I have ever used. I have used MCaffee, Norton and a few others, I use my computer for work all the time. I'm self employed and cannot afford to mess around with viruses (if I could get away with it, I wouldn't use Windows because it's so weak in the security department - but that's another story).

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

I use the Symantec AntiVirus Client Corporate Edition v8.1. It's the "no bullshit" simple layout, no extra bells or whistles, scans the e-mails and runs 24/7 virus protection which has caught an uncountable number of virii from entering and infecting my home network.

McAfee isn't too good, and I'm not too sure about Symantec's Norton Antivirus 2003 or the likes... they just seem too fancy and too reminiscent of resource pigs.

I have used pretty much all of the Anti Virus applications in the past for experimental/testing purposes. I found Norton was the easiest to bypass with the simple binding of a Trojan server and a program like winrar.exe (scary eh).
At the moment I?m using Kaspersky for an Anti Virus and TDS 3 (Trojan Defence Suite) for viruses and Trojans. I like TDS3 because it is aimed at Trojans and has a decent memory scanner and some other cool features. Another option for a secondary backup is Trojan Guard. Kaspersky does scan incoming and outgoing data.

You could also try defragging the boot files to see if that has any effect.

Thanks for the advice guys,
I looked at the AVG homepage, says the free trial expires in 30 days. Does AVG automatically scan new dls for viruses?

AVG Free has no trial - it is always free. It will alert you when a virus is noticed on your system - you should still scan the files that you download before opening them, however. rightclick>scan with AVG.
