Is the mainstream American accent superior to European accents, because it's universally coherent? * 2
    #26303067 -

I notice Europeans have no trouble understanding Americans, yet Americans have trouble sometimes making out what Europeans are saying.

Plus, American accents are easier to learn, especially when you look at how many European actors are acting in America as American characters, but it's rare for Americans to pass as European/Australian/etc in Hollywood. Even when American actors speak in English accents, native Europeans seem to notice the accent isn't authentic, whereas when Europeans/Australians act as Americans (Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Andrew Lincoln, etc), nobody in America can tell they're not American natives.

Also, when Europeans sing, they lose their accent (Celine Dion, Adele, Natalie Imbruglia, Leona Lewis, Lifehouse, etc). So I always thought this meant the American accent was the most pure and optimal way to speak English.

I'm not saying the American accent is the best sounding accent. In fact, I love foreign accents, even though I often have no fuckin clue what they're saying. Some of them sound really fancy, sophisticated, stylish, and ornate.

But I am arguing the American accent is superior to all other accents because of its simplicity... its learning curve, clarity, and purity.

Hardest accent to understand was this Guy from OZ.

Some English accents are more annoying than others. Mine is so bad I have trouble with automated systems.

Only an American would even bother to postulate that American _________ is superior to all other _________. It's the American way. They fucking get you in this place man, they get you young, and they get you deep, and they stuff that superiority complex fully into your developing brains.

I think it's bloody delusional, personally, although I don't blame those taken in by it.

It'd be hard not to be, growing up here.

America is like being locked in a room all day with a TV with one station on it constantly talking about how wonderful it is to be in that one room.

That's a wonderful and very apt analogy.

The only problem I see with Holland is that if you want to do something fun, you have to go to Germany.  I don't think there's a city close to having a million people in Holland.

Nederlands:  The country

Holland:  2 of the 12 Provinces (North Holland and South Holland) They are next to the Atlantic.

Amsterdam:  The capital of the Nederlands.  It is within the Province of North Holland. (Like Ottawa is in Ontario)

I honestly have absolutely no idea how you came to this conclusion. It's fucking barmy; Holland is fun as fuck.

What do you define as 'fun'?

Other than a megaton explosion, what fun requires a city of a million people?

Untrue from a quick look at most data available from what I can tell. Not that IQ really relates to the understanding of accents one is not exposed to on a regular basis. I'd guess that someone from Mexico and the United States would more readily understand eachother's accent than either would a Dutch one. And vice versa.

In the same way Americans not exposed to other cultures buy into the 'America #1" vibe in general, one taking a hard stance against it for the sake of hoping to curb it might find themselves forming the same kind of baseless stereotypes.

I can understand where people come from when they consider the negative aspects of general American ignorance concerning outside cultures. But then, I feel that many of the most vocal critics of that general sentiment fall into the trap of being equally blind to their own prejudices, and also lump broad groups of diverse people into a category for the purpose of measuring themselves up to some kind of perceived competition.

 I didn't get that either. So having a supposed higher IQ means that one will be more adept at better understanding an accent?

I'm a linguist so this is my specialist subject. There is no such thing as a 'pure' accent. No such rankings exist. What you have taken is a prescriptivist view which says that there are better or more pure forms of language. Linguistics is descriptive, not seeking to apply value judgements to variety but simply recognising natural variety for what it is.
