Re: Trump allegedly lies & doctors map of hurricane Dorian, to pretend a tweet he sent was not wrong [Re: relic]

Likely there were agency rules and maybe even laws broken when political actors publicly questioned the statements made by agency scientists.

As someone who has studied atmospheric physics & meteorology in general, who has recorded my local weather (wx) phenomenon, precip, temp, etc for the last 40 years, and has helped to refine wording of warning products in concert with NWS personnel, this conversation has been thoroughly exhausting and disheartening to read.

A core mission of the NWS is to accurately & concisely communicate risk to the laypeople of the general public in an easily understood format, thereby building trust for their products in the public sphere. People must trust the NWS products in order for forecasts and warnings to be effective.

The wx community has fought for years against the old tropes about 'aw, the weatherman doesn't know what he's talking about', 'the wxman is NEVER right', etc.  What trump did by undermining an important forecast serves only to work against the development of that very necessary trust in NWS products.

Falcon, trump was wrong to ever mention Alabama at all (unless he did so about five days before his inaccurate tweet).  Having about a ten percent chance of 35 mph wind in a tiny sliver of the state doesn't not in any way constitute a warning about possibly getting hit (much) harder than expected...it served no reasonable, practical, good purpose and only served to work against the forecasts being produced for the hurricane.

Trump fucked up, the media predictably reacted (over reacted if you want, IDC and that's not the point), and the administration doubled down while further undermining the science being done by the NWS.  It is a big deal only insofar as eroding trust in NWS products that work to save life, limb, and property of Americans and our neighbors.

Fal, you've misread the spaghetti plots and those plots are not part of the official forecast.  It's ok, nobody expects laypeople to understand spaghetti plots and trump is included in that group that's not expected to understand them.  It's unfortunate that our thirst for info and seeming need to manufacture news has made those plots available for public consumption and I suspect this debacle will cause a rethinking of their availability.

In summary, trump was wrong, the media reacted for a gotcha moment causing the very predictable trump to double and triple down, and that should have been the end of it... unfortunately his ego and admin have now assaulted the scientific integrity of NWS personnel and the products they publish which only serves to make it more likely that the public's safety will be compromised in the future.

Well said.

I appreciate your reply, but 35 mph technically doesn't qualify as tropical storm winds (it's 39-73 mph).

This debate is about Trump's tweet:  "In addition to Florida - South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama, will most likely be hit much harder than anticipated. Looking like one of the largest hurricanes ever. Already category 5. BE CAREFUL!" and whether he deserved the media hammering he got given that he previously had information that Alabama would be hit.  I previously acknowledged that the correction was warranted (also here, and here), but not the follow up media shit storm, in my opinion.

But that WAS my point.

Trump showed the information he previously got from them to justify his tweet, which was rightfully clarified after he tweeted it.  It was the ensuing media shitstorm that I'm arguing against.

If they're not called forecasts, then I used the wrong word.  But maybe you can clarify what spaghetti plots show if not forecasted hurricane paths?

Re: 35 mph, yes I know that 39mph is needed for minimal TS force winds.  I took a rhetorical short cut rather than saying 'being forecasted was an approx 10% chance of only minimal TS force winds in a tiny sliver of Alabama during a previously issued forecast'.  Wasn't trying to be rhetorically sneaky there, sorry.

SC, NC, and GA were never "likely (to) be hit much harder than anticipated" unless one considers a CAT 5 hurricane's effects to be inconsequential.  IOW, the wording of the tweet was confusing because the NWS had been predicting and communicating the possibility of extreme danger to life and property in those states for a week or so at that point.  Why even make that specific tweet?  Why not make a tweet linking to the website which shows specific forecasts for those areas, in wording which has been refined so as to be specific, easily understood, and clearly communicate any danger?  The NWS has been studying for decades to produce the most clear, unambiguous wording that the majority of people can understand; it's what they do so leave that task to the professionals.

At the time of his tweet, NO WARNINGS concerning Alabama were warranted.  None.  What he wrote served no good purpose and could only confuse the public.  He was dead to rights wrong for having sent that tweet and it's another case of him not leaving the pros to do what they're trained to do; in this case communicate specific risks.  There is no rationalizing it when the extreme danger to life and property in other states is considered.

Re: the media response...you say they overreacted, others say it was warranted, I say that anytime the leader of the nation causes any confusion in the face of an ongoing regional disaster he or she deserves strong criticism.  But again, that is my main point: there was zero need to cause any confusion instead of letting the pros do what the pros do.

---

Numerical wx prediction models rely on, in major part, a set of inputs called 'initial conditions'.  Those are the various inputs from satellites, wx observation sites, buouys, ships at sea, balloons released from.NWS offices with measuring equipment, etc.  ICs involve things like temps, wind speed and direction, water content and more at different levels of the atmosphere, air pressure, sea surface temp, and a hundred other et ceteras.

Since the start of computer modeling, we have found that by slightly tweaking these initial conditions and re-running the same exact computer program--because initial conditions are fluid and wver changing--then taking a sort of average of all those computer simulations, we can improve the accuracy of numerical wx prediction...it's called ensemble forecasting.

Spaghetti plots can consist of the results all of the ensemble members (model runs of the same computer program, slightly tweaked), can consist of the outputs of many different computer model programs, and can be a combination of both ensembles and different programs.  They are just results of running a program or programs.  A forecast is the 'official publication' which takes into account Numerical Wx Prediction model outputs, manual adjustments for known biases of the different computer models, data not ingested into the model, forecaster knowledge and skill, and teamwork between many scientists.

Therefore a spaghetti plot is never a forecast, just a tool used to make a forecast.

Sorry about the formatting.  On my phone, limited time, and, frankly, I don't care to argue about the response to the president's tweets.  I just had to state why the tweets were inaccurate, irresponsible, dangerous, and deserved of criticism

Okay we get it - "lamestream media", "fake news". Now when are you going to acknowledge our point that the Trump administration is flagrantly attempting to make the NOAA and NWS base their reports on political motivations rather than the objective science?

I agree with much of what you and relic are saying.  But was Trump really trying to get NOAA and NWS to change their reports, or was he just trying to get them to acknowledge that older reports were as he described?  If you've already shown the former to be true, I apologize, but I don't recall that.

Was he "attempting to make the NOAA and NWS base their reports on political motivations" as claimed (if he did, sorry I missed the proof for that)?  I though he just asked if previous reports aligned to what he said.

We know that Trump displayed a doctored forecast in defence of his claim. We don't know that he was directly involved in the doctoring, but we do know that it was doctored in a way that changed the forcast to support his argument and was directly used by him in this capacity.

We also know that an unsigned statement released by the "NOAA" is currently being investigated for a breach of policy on scientific integrity. We don't know that Trump ordered or issued the statement, but we do know the unsigned statement claimed that Trump was correct in warning Alabama about hurricane Dorian and the Birmingham office of the NWS was incorrect in stating Alabama would not feel any effects from hurricane Dorian - despite the fact that passage of time has proved the NWS made the correct forcast.

Finally, we know that the actual scientists behind the NOAA and NWS are essentially unanimous in their support of the office of Birmingham. We don't have a public poll (I don't believe), but we do know the NWS employee union head has spoken out against it and that the Acting Chief Scientist of the NOAA has spoken out too. Perhaps you know of some dissenting meteorologists because this looks pretty unanimous to me:

I want to follow by reproducing a passage from the statement released by the Chief Scientist of the NOAA:
Quote:
There followed, last Friday, an unsigned press release from "NOAA" that inappropriately and incorrectly contradicted the NWS forecaster. My understanding is that this intervention to contradict the forecaster was not based on science but on external factors including reputation and appearance, or simply put, political. Our NOAA Scientific Integrity Policy and Code of Scientific Conduct make clear that all NOAA employees shall approach all scientific activities with honesty, objectively, and completely, without allegiance to individuals, organizations, or ideology. The content of this press release is very concerning as it compromises the ability of NOAA to convey life-saving information necessary to avoid substantial and specific danger to public health and safety. If the public cannot trust our information, or we debase our forecaster's warnings and products, that specific danger arises.

You know that the value of our science is in the complexity of our understanding, our ability to convey that understanding to a wide audience of users of this information, and to establish and sustain the public trust in the truth and legitimacy of that information. Unfortunately, the press release of last Friday violated this trust and violated NOAA's policies of scientific integrity. In my role as Assistant Administrator for Research, and as I continue to administratively serve as Acting Chief Scientist, I am pursuing the potential violations of our NOAA Administrative Order on Scientific Integrity.

That's a significant amount of direct evidence that someone within the Trump administration is attempting to get the NOAA and NWS to change their reports to reflect Trumps mistake. This should, and apparently is, now being investigated. That's also a significant amount of circumstantial evidence, especially when Trump’s undeniable history as a pathological liar is taken into consideration, that Trump was directly involved.

Still, it doesn't really matter if Trump was directly involved or not, what matters is that an administration that has (literally from day one) shown a flagrant disregard for the truth has taken another step towards an Orwellian post-truth world; and unlike lies about inaugural crowd size, forcing the weather to revolve around Trump will have direct consequences.

But you're so focused on catching the "Lamestream media" in some "TDS" gotcha moment that you apparently can't even see this. How is your behaviour any different than your criticism against the media for missing the real stories in their scramble to mock Trump?

I agree his forecast added a sharpie line in support of his previous tweet.  Trump claimed the sharpie line aligned with forecasts he had seen.  I haven't yet seen the evidence that any previous forecasts were changed to align with the sharpie marks.

The NOAA report said they had given Trump information that aligned with the sharpie marks.  I didn't read anything about ANY forecast being changed.

I believe herein lies all the confusion.  It seems Trump and the NWS were talking about two different things.  The NWS was correct to clarify Trump's tweet.  But Trump was correct to say his tweet was based on real data.

I suspect a larger story was missed as the media distracted us all with this one.

Re: Trump allegedly lies & doctors map of hurricane Dorian, to pretend a tweet he sent was not wrong [Re: Falcon91Wolvrn03]

Ok, so in summary:

Trump tweeted: "In addition to Florida - South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama, will most likely be hit much harder than anticipated. Looking like one of the largest hurricanes ever. Already category 5. BE CAREFUL!"

In response, the NWS tweeted: "Alabama will NOT see any impacts from #Dorian. We repeat, no impacts from Hurricane #Dorian will be felt across Alabama."

After taking some heat, Trump noted that "Alabama was in the original forecast" and presented one of the original forecast maps, with a Sharpie line going into Alabama.

NOAA backed Trump's claim by posting this statement stating "the information provided by NOAA and the National Hurricane Center to President Trump and the wider public demonstrated that tropical-storm-force winds from Hurricane Dorian could impact Alabama. This is clearly demonstrated in Hurricane Advisories #15 through #41, which can be viewed at the following link.

Does this not show Trump was correct about the original forecasts?
Does this not show that Trump wasn't trying to get NOAA/NWS to lie on his behalf?

Or do people here think the graphics in NOAA's statement were faked?

I haven't seen Trump claim his original tweet was correct at the time; just that he though Alabama would be impacted based on the original forecasts.
