Can WBS be bad?

Hey y’all, quick question. Can WBS be bad? Like contaminated to where even pressure cooking it doesn’t kill trich? Every jar I nocced up in my SAB got the green in it, so I did a little test and washed some more grains and left them outside for a few days just to see what would happen (I’m in Texas). I shook up my colander to try to get them all SUPER dry, and after 3 days, the middle had trich, likely because it was still damp?

My other theory is that my master jar that I was using is contaminated, this is what I think really happened. I hadn’t used it in about 6 months, and when I took some WBS out of it, I noticed a ton of condensation in the jar the next few days.

I’m going to make agar tonight and check the master jar, just curious as to the thoughts from the pros. The master jar is solid white also.

Nah.

Your master jar was most likely dirty or your sab game was weak:shrug:

Even temperatures well below what your PC hits are more than enough to kill Trichoderma species and their spores.

As stated above, 99.999999999% chance it was your inoculant or tek.... or both.... or you didn't cook it correctly.... or your filters are no good.... or all of the above.

Fungi like trich die at pretty low temps actually. Even if you bitched the PC you still likely killed all fungi. Hell, even if you just boiled it you most likely killed all the fungi.

It's the bacteria that create these extremophile endospores that cause us to have to cook for so long at such high temps.

If you got a fungal infection, it came from outside your grain through innoculant/inoculation technique etc.

What they all said.
While not recommended practice I have in the past rePCed a grain jar full of penicillium mold and spores and successfully used it as a grain jar. I’ve also forgotten jars in the back of the fridge long enough for them to get mold spots. PCed those a bit extra and used them as well to success.

It’s better not to do that and instead keep everything clean but the PC does a really effective job when used right.

Another quick question for y’all, what’s the best way to sterilize a SAB? Bleach spray? Lysol? Alcohol?

Ya don't.
You can sanitize it but all you need is still air

I just give it a quick wipe with iso. Bleach works too (10%) but, really, still air is the crux of the issue. Sometimes i don't wipe it down at all.

And, as cron said, there is a huge difference between sterilizing and sanitizing. It may seem a bit petty but it's actually very important to understand in this craft.

Yep.  2 hour PC run at 14 PSI and redropped grain from a new master.  The biggest issue wasn’t that the jar previously had mold but that at 4 total hours in the PC the grains were starting to cook and brown.

Haha oh no, that was years ago and yes the darker cooked grain did make it harder to tell contams and stuck together more when shaking.  Like I said it’s not recommended, it’s just that the PC does kill a lot of things and even contam loaded grains will come out clean after a good PC run.

I’m guessing drying was partly what was causing the cooking.
If I’m remembering right I had to baby them on the stove to prevent the bottom half from becomingly noticeably darker and more cooked than the top and when using WBS it was more of a pain than just making new grain.
