wbs question
    #2753561 - 06/01/04 05:02 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

about a month ago my pal innoculated 4 quart jars of wbs with spores. he did not have a pressure cooker so he boiled them for 1.5 hours. a few days after innoculating he noticed a sort of slimy residue on the bottoms of the containers but figured they were only slightly overwatered. he also noticed a slight odor, but nothing compared to his previous experiences with bacterial infections of pf jars. the mycelium started growing and now, a month later is still not done. one of the jars has developed a green contamination but the other 3 seem to be slowly progessing. he just learned that it is usually not recommended to boil quart jars, or if you do, at least boil 3 days in a row to allow the surviving spores to germinate and then be killed in the next boiling. his question is: are the 3 remaining jars dangerous to fruit even though they seem to have healthy mycelium growing? or should he just be safe and through all of them out and start over after more thoroughly sterilizing?

Definately sounds like a bacterial contam. I suggest your pal get together 20-40 bucks and invest in a PC. It's well worth it.

ok, so im definately throwing out the jar with the green contaminant, but do the others really need to go? my question is: is it DANGEROUS to grow the others?

Even after pc'ing, I've had bacterial problems with WBS. The solution is tindilization, which can be found in the bulk section somewhere. Basically you boil the jars and let them sit for a day to allow the endospores to germinate. Then boil them again to kill the germinated endospores, let sit a day, repeat 3 times. After that I pc'ed and had 0 contams, but the pc'ing may have been an unnecessary precaution.

WBS or grains should be donecolonizing in two weeiks or less. You have a bacteria contam. No they arn't safe to eat.

they are contaminated with bacteria and that doesnt sound like mycelium growth... ive had jars do this before and it turned out to be a form of green mold... chuck em, they make ur incubator smell like rotten socks.

ok, now i have a new question... 3 days ago i took a piece of mycelium out of the healthiest of the 3 jars. although there may be a bacterial infection, the mycelium on the top of the jar (where i took it from) seemed to be healthy. i made liquid mycelium and innoculated 2 more wbs jars. At the time i still did not know wbs contains endospores which are notoriously resistent to heat. despite the high probability of contamination, these two jars seem to be quickly colonizing and show no signs of bacteria or any other contamination. if the jars seem to be doing well, should i still through them out because i got the mycelium from the top of a jar that possibly has bacteria on the bottom?

Can wbs jars go well without all that hibady-jibady, is just pc'ing it fine and possible to have no contams?

Jopo, not quite sure what you're asking... but I recently did some wbs jars, pc'ed 3 quart jars and all colonized with no contams.

If your jars have an odd odor or color,it would be wise if you would trash them.Contams are not to be messed with,as some can make you very ill.
