This is getting boring, time to watch Wonka and Alice in Wonderland and maybe some Fear and Loathing while I am, the man, from New Orleans.  And the only time he is satisfied...

Of course living poverty doesn't make someone happy.
But there are plenty happy poor people. That is all.

When I've travelled in third world countries, people always look far more genuinely happy in them than they do in the richer nations I've travelled.

If I had to guess why I've seen this, I'd suggest that they seem to appreciate the little things so much more, like family, community, and social interaction and bonding.

Things which, in the first world, we really seem to be losing sight of.

Truly, whoever possesses little is that much less possessed; priased be a little poverty!

It will only destroy what you are not.

Re: Im so sick of hearing money cant buy you happiness [Re: Anahata]

Money can only buy happiness up unto a point.  It's roughly at about $70,000/year.  Any more than that, and the amount you make doesn't correlate directly with how happy that money can make you.

https://www.cnbc.com/2015/12/14/money-can-buy-happiness-but-only-to-a-point.html

I'll also leave you with two quotes from one of my favorite shows, Bojack Horseman, on happiness.  The first quote kind of reflects on how I approach being happy currently in my life, even though it's only a shallow explanation of how to find happiness:

"The key to being happy isn't the search for meaning, it's to just keep yourself busy with unimportant nonsense, and eventually, you'll be dead."-Mr. Peanutbutter

And the second quote rings more true but is much more difficult to enact in one's own life, as "giving up everything" isn't literal.

"It takes a long time to realize how truly miserable you are, and even longer to see that it doesn't have to be that way. Only after you give up everything, can you begin to find a way to be happy."-Mr. Cuddly Whiskers

This "give up everything," to me, means something more along the lines of giving up on the idea that the search for meaning.  It could even meaning giving up on the aspirations for wealth, power, fame, or even the aspirations of "being a good person."  All these searches, we can't help but do them, this is what is meant by "karma," one can't help but go about "doing" something, it's simply in one's nature.  Even attempting to avert "doing something," by "doing nothing," IS doing something.  But being attached to that karma, by either grasping towards those goals/aspirations/possessions, will undoubtedly lead to dissatisfaction.

The difficulty in finding happiness lies in this concept of "giving up everything." That's because it's not about giving up all your possessions or aspirations, its understanding that the happiness doesn't come from the accomplishments of goals or the accumulation of wealth.  Strangely enough happiness stems from that understanding.  The understanding that all your goals, although good to have, will not inherently bring you happiness.  It's the striving, and the suffering in the striving, and the compassion we feel towards others when we recognize our collective suffering in our striving, that can bring a sense of happiness.

Think about when we feel most connected, most compassionate, most..well, happy!  It's actually when we can recognize our own struggle in other people.  When we can identify with that struggle, it somehow makes our own struggle worthwhile.  Somehow, not the accomplishment at the end of the struggle, but the tale we regale to our friends after the struggle is over, is what brings us together.  It doesn't have to be a tale of success, or failure, it just have to be the tale of what we did, and perhaps, continue to do.

But only after you give up this concept of all this striving, all these possessions, money, accomplishments, as being somehow the SOURCE of our happiness, and instead recognize that the SOURCE of our happiness comes from our connection to others, our compassionate presence and appreciation for the miraculous quality of the present moment.  If we can recognize our desire for accomplishments, like money and fame and virtue, but at the same conduct ourselves without attachment, aversion, resentment, or cynicism; then we can come to understand that these desires will not bring us happiness, nor will they detract from it.  For only in understanding and compassion, can happiness truly be found out..and by the way, it's NOT permanent.

The good news is that nothing lasts forever, the bad news is that nothing lasts forever.

Hope that helps.

This is pretty spot on. More accurately, being broke and struggling financially produces stress and is difficult. However once you get to, and pass a certain point having more money isn't going to make you happier.

An easy exercise: Think about the things that make/made you happiest in life, were they related to money?  Probably not. When I look back on my life, I've gone from minimum wage jobs and being a "broke" college student, to a 6 figure salary. It hasn't inherently made me any happier.

People who've never been poor might say that, might not understand why some days I work 12 hrs and only have money for an apple and gallon of water, and honestly money would provide me happiness because I would enrich the lives of my loved ones

I'm not complaining about rich folk or whatever I'm jus saying people who say that in this day and age have no perspective

It is true that fulfilment comes through your relationships with others and all that, but the stress of being poor, of skipping meals so another family member can eat etc

That's the type shit that makes me know well that with money I'd be the same as the poor me, except my stresses would shift and hopefully to worthwhile stresses

Fuck Dave.

Fuck em straight to hell

I understand most of the hippie answers are young people who grew up middle class at least

I understand true poverty, but it's a stress in life that sucks man, I remember coming home from school wondering if we'd still have our home, if the bank was taking the house

Yea what stza said.  Seeing a notice to vacate before X date or the sheriff is coming posted on the front door is totally not kewl man. Time to try to make a grand or so ‘appear’ or it’s bye bye shelter and hello being raped by motels weekly, live in your car, or if you aren’t fortunate enough just be homeless.
