Do you take bitcoin?

I'm not offering, just asking.

IMO, purpose leads to happiness.

If your purpose is to make more money so you can buy nice things, then row row, row your boat.

Thing about money is, you have to be making it to be able to spend large amounts. If you're not making an income, money goes real quick.

i think you are really underestimating what constitutes fulfillment in life, your relationships with the people and animals you love really are all that matter beyond being extremely destitute. the mind is amazing at adjusting, boredom and insatiability lurk perpetually within the ego's desires what once was a special treat falls down an all too familiar gluttonous path and becomes mundane.

im not saying money doesn't help relieve stress and provides endless opportunities for adventure and growth but it isn't going to make you happy, you will still be you if you have wealth or not as will all your personal struggles.

If you're a shallow materialist then of course it will get you as close to happiness as you'll ever achieve unless you as the above poster said change your purpose. I lived homeless at a river for 9 months with my significant other. Had no money whatsoever and that was the happiest I've ever been no friggin lie.

Of course money can buy happiness temporarily.
Cool things are fun to buy and own.
Is life better with a nice house and car?
It can be, but not for everyone.

True happiness and self love in life, nah homie, that can't be bought.
And money doesn't necessarily make it easier to get there either.

Money will enable you to not struggle all the fucking time. All your bills will be paid and if shit goes wrong like your car breaks down,  you'll have the money to fix  it.

It wont bring you true deep down happiness, but it will free up your mind and life so you can focus on the important things in life that will bring you true happiness.

Money can help a person work on every level of the Self-Actualization pyramid: https://positivepsychologyprogram.com/self-actualization/

Money opens optiona that werent there before. Of course it wont find u true love or deep self-discovery, but having money can help u achieve those things by having the option to travel or take self-improvement classes, retreats, and having a yacht doesnt hurt either

If you want to scale the money pyramid, create something that the people essentially 'need' to be 'happy'.

Sell or invent outlets of happiness, hope, pleasure and/or entertainment.

Nearly everything around us today is entertainment. Even our food, and water. :yesnod:

You don't 'need' a lot of shit. My 2cents.

In theory the less 'creative' you are in entertaining yourself, the more you'll be a slave to 'consuming' and paying for other's creativity to ensure that you are sufficiently 'entertained' to avoid - the void, that is always present.

So we're basically playing a giant game to see who can be the most entertaining or entertained.

We're kids playing in a sandbox, waiting to die.

I think what people mean is that money provides diminishing returns. Once your basic necessities are met (and a bit more I'd think), more money doesn't necessarily make you happier. I think its fairly true. Some of the best times of my life were in college when relatively speaking, I had little money.

True happiness is smiling and not caring when your breaks down.

The ease of life which current day wealth provides can easily blind someone to true happiness, as they never have to come to terms with struggling. Having nothing and being fine with it is preparation for happiness in all situations. There's a happy medium in there for everyone.

Money is a tool; though if I'm a carpenter I don't worship a hammer, regardless of how important to me it is. No the carpenter worships the craft, and the craft here is happiness. I can build a house without a hammer. In fact you can argue a properly jointed piece is more durable than anything. And thus we have, "Money can't buy you happiness."

Money is just a symbolic icon that represents an established worth. Upon looking at the objects used to represent said worth it is soon realised that said objects are actually not worth what they represent.
Currency is a figment of our imagination.
Currency only holds value while there are those to believe it has value.

People can be happy; true happiness is a result from no pressure, no value, no system, no expectations, but good things happening such as love.

People can be pleased by value, ect. It's a posative feeling but it's different to happy.

Pleased and happiness are too often confused.

And then What? Paying your bills isn't happiness. It's absence of stress, and that can be an important component of happiness but you have to go beyond that otherwise you risk shear boredom. Call me a  idiot all you want but I grew up with Bentleys and Aston Martin's and Lamborghinis around. When you have all that absurd money and it's still being managed by type A's who act like they're going to pop an aneurysm at every little thing that goes wrong you get a new perspective. Most people just take on bigger investments, bigger houses, nicer cars, more lavish vacations, etc. They're still slaves to money. Of course if I had a billion dollars I would be happy because I realize that. I'd pay off a 1200 square ft house in the place of my dreams (which is far the fuck away from affluent neighborhoods), and spend the rest of my life doing what I cared most about. I'd be investing my talents and money in the bettering of humanity and myself not simply accumulating more shit to take care of. But there lies the difference. Money doesn't MAKE you happy. YOU make you happy and money can definitely enhance that

I have to disagree to some extent on a few select instances. Some of the most satisfying things I have ever done in my life have come from overcoming temptations and guilty pleasures. For example, being able to quit cigarettes and giving up meat and dairy products. The health benefits alone are reward enough but for some reason I feel really proud that I was able to do something most people around me find impossible.

But I think those are exceptions to the rule. For me if I ate one slice of cheese pizza or smoked a single cigarette the floodgates of excuses would open and I would find myself falling back into the same, unhealthy routines.

When I've travelled in third world countries, people always look far more genuinely happy in them than they do in the richer nations I've travelled.

If I had to guess why I've seen this, I'd suggest that they seem to appreciate the little things so much more, like family, community, and social interaction and bonding.

Things which, in the first world, we really seem to be losing sight of.

Truly, whoever possesses little is that much less possessed; priased be a little poverty!

Re: Im so sick of hearing money cant buy you happiness [Re: Anahata]

Money can only buy happiness up unto a point.  It's roughly at about $70,000/year.  Any more than that, and the amount you make doesn't correlate directly with how happy that money can make you.

https://www.cnbc.com/2015/12/14/money-can-buy-happiness-but-only-to-a-point.html

I'll also leave you with two quotes from one of my favorite shows, Bojack Horseman, on happiness.  The first quote kind of reflects on how I approach being happy currently in my life, even though it's only a shallow explanation of how to find happiness:

"The key to being happy isn't the search for meaning, it's to just keep yourself busy with unimportant nonsense, and eventually, you'll be dead."-Mr. Peanutbutter

And the second quote rings more true but is much more difficult to enact in one's own life, as "giving up everything" isn't literal.

"It takes a long time to realize how truly miserable you are, and even longer to see that it doesn't have to be that way. Only after you give up everything, can you begin to find a way to be happy."-Mr. Cuddly Whiskers

This "give up everything," to me, means something more along the lines of giving up on the idea that the search for meaning.  It could even meaning giving up on the aspirations for wealth, power, fame, or even the aspirations of "being a good person."  All these searches, we can't help but do them, this is what is meant by "karma," one can't help but go about "doing" something, it's simply in one's nature.  Even attempting to avert "doing something," by "doing nothing," IS doing something.  But being attached to that karma, by either grasping towards those goals/aspirations/possessions, will undoubtedly lead to dissatisfaction.

The difficulty in finding happiness lies in this concept of "giving up everything." That's because it's not about giving up all your possessions or aspirations, its understanding that the happiness doesn't come from the accomplishments of goals or the accumulation of wealth.  Strangely enough happiness stems from that understanding.  The understanding that all your goals, although good to have, will not inherently bring you happiness.  It's the striving, and the suffering in the striving, and the compassion we feel towards others when we recognize our collective suffering in our striving, that can bring a sense of happiness.

Think about when we feel most connected, most compassionate, most..well, happy!  It's actually when we can recognize our own struggle in other people.  When we can identify with that struggle, it somehow makes our own struggle worthwhile.  Somehow, not the accomplishment at the end of the struggle, but the tale we regale to our friends after the struggle is over, is what brings us together.  It doesn't have to be a tale of success, or failure, it just have to be the tale of what we did, and perhaps, continue to do.

But only after you give up this concept of all this striving, all these possessions, money, accomplishments, as being somehow the SOURCE of our happiness, and instead recognize that the SOURCE of our happiness comes from our connection to others, our compassionate presence and appreciation for the miraculous quality of the present moment.  If we can recognize our desire for accomplishments, like money and fame and virtue, but at the same conduct ourselves without attachment, aversion, resentment, or cynicism; then we can come to understand that these desires will not bring us happiness, nor will they detract from it.  For only in understanding and compassion, can happiness truly be found out..and by the way, it's NOT permanent.

The good news is that nothing lasts forever, the bad news is that nothing lasts forever.

Hope that helps.

Money can only buy happiness up unto a point.  It's roughly at about $70,000/year.  Any more than that, and the amount you make doesn't correlate directly with how happy that money can make you.

This is pretty spot on. More accurately, being broke and struggling financially produces stress and is difficult. However once you get to, and pass a certain point having more money isn't going to make you happier.

An easy exercise: Think about the things that make/made you happiest in life, were they related to money?  Probably not. When I look back on my life, I've gone from minimum wage jobs and being a "broke" college student, to a 6 figure salary. It hasn't inherently made me any happier.

People who've never been poor might say that, might not understand why some days I work 12 hrs and only have money for an apple and gallon of water, and honestly money would provide me happiness because I would enrich the lives of my loved ones

I'm not complaining about rich folk or whatever I'm jus saying people who say that in this day and age have no perspective

It is true that fulfilment comes through your relationships with others and all that, but the stress of being poor, of skipping meals so another family member can eat etc

That's the type shit that makes me know well that with money I'd be the same as the poor me, except my stresses would shift and hopefully to worthwhile stresses

I never met a single person from my neighborhood (that I grew up in) that said money can't buy you happiness... except Dave.  That fuck has a trust fund.

Fuck Dave.

Fuck em straight to hell

I understand most of the hippie answers are young people who grew up middle class at least

I understand true poverty, but it's a stress in life that sucks man, I remember coming home from school wondering if we'd still have our home, if the bank was taking the house

Your personality has alot to do with it, but come on people basif living needs have to be met

Yea what stza said.  Seeing a notice to vacate before X date or the sheriff is coming posted on the front door is totally not kewl man. Time to try to make a grand or so ‘appear’ or it’s bye bye shelter and hello being raped by motels weekly, live in your car, or if you aren’t fortunate enough just be homeless.

African cocoa farmers agree. They make that in a lifetime if they're lucky.

Money can't buy happiness but I'd rather cry in a Mercedes than in a clunker.
