colonization question
    #26117494 -

while colonizing a tub that has the coir, verm, and spawn mixture should the air holes be un covered for gas exchange or should I tape them over during colonization?  I read somewhere that you want a buildup of c02 but that doesnt around right to me.  I have a small monotub with a single line of holes around the perimeter of the tub above where the substrate will be.

after having done some trials I put my tubs into fruiting conditions(lid upside down for air gaps) immediately. I have noticed faster colonization times, faster times to pinning as well. Cubensis is an aerobic organism, While some old books talk about high co2 during colonization my own tests show clearly that FAE right away is superior. Try it out for yourself and do your own side by sides and let the community know.

I now make no distinction between colonization conditions and fruiting conditions. I just chose to call it
Growing Conditions
My tubs do not dry out being in "fruiting conditions" during "colonization"
My yields have stayed the same. My time to full colonization has decreased as has the time to pinning and harvest.
I have always had exposed top grains, doing "fruiting conditions" immediately has not caused an issue even with exposed grains.

You want a build up of co2 but also a small amount of gas exchange. The holes you made will be fine you would just need to monitor for moisture periodically. Some people colonize with fruiting conditions.

Well you can let it consolidate and wait 7-10 days to put into fruiting or u can put right into fruiting as soon as you spawn. Monos I usually wait 7 days. It's personal preference.

I have traditional mono with 2 holes at sub level on both sides and 1 hole on the ends up high. My smaller monos I only have 1 on sides and 1 high on ends.

I'd say do what you want to do. It won't pin until it's ready or it faces a contam issue.

Hoped that helped
