I live paycheck to paycheck I don't use drugs and I stopped drinking two years ago. I will never be able to buy a house start a family or even go on a vacation. If there was ever a emergency like a medical or car one I would lose my job and likely become homeless. There will be no retirement for me I will work until I am no longer able to.

What a wide range of responses, too much to respond to individually but ill hit some points people brought up:

Planning for retirement comes from the optimist in me. Yeah I could die early; ive already had cancer twice - but im not going to live like tomorrow is the last day. I'm a fighter, and would rather plan for the best than expect the worst. I have things to live for, and people I want to pass things to even if I did die. To die unexpectedly with retirement money in the bank, if the dice rolled that way, fuckit, at least my wife and daughter are taken care of. So yeah I dont like expecting the worst outcome, because that is not usually The outcome for most people. Most of us will live longer than we currently expect to.

I think the trick for some people and retirement planning is to try and make work its own retirement, if you can. Find a job that you enjoy so you dont feel like youre slaving away. Make it fun, and shape it to your needs of a work/life balance. Once you have that, you can kind of live partially retired, while planning for a more permanent one. Also, I've always been an advantage gambler, and putting money into investment vehicles feels kind of like 'smart' gambling. Its a lot slower than counting cards at a blackjack table, but I got time! The research of stocks, funds, or whatever, and then putting aside the money, and pulling the trigger on an investment - just makes the process fun. Doing it that way, I feel like saving for retirement is kind of exciting in and of itself. So yeah, thats my shpeal for tonight
