I WANT TO RETIRE
    #5641182 - 05/17/06 08:51 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I don't want to be a gypsy anymore. I've seen the other side and I want a white picket fence, a puppy and a garden. I don't want to live in a stupid apartment anymore and pay rent out my ass to nosy landlords.

Why is having something that is so normal so unattainable? Why can't I have something real? A space of my own. My own little comfortable corner of the world...

I haven't even thrown out all the boxes from my last move and it looks like I'm going to need them again at the end of the month.

Where is my house?

Where are my roots?

When is it ok to unpack and put pictures on the wall?

Hey, I think you can have all of those things. I think you already probably do have them on a spiritual level. You simply need to bring them to you on this plane. Start telling yourself everyday that you are settling down, that you are becoming stable, that the house, fence, and puppy are materializing for you. It will happen.

I prefer a slightly droopy chain link fence with no puppy.

I know waiting is frustrating, but there's this old cliche that you've probably heard a million times..goes something like "the grass is always greener..."

Be well, bom.

Tough break.

There is no corner of the world that belongs to anyone.

-----"What is he talking about?"-----

If in the lawful precedence of things, if someone were to raid your house, you would pursue compensation.

If the world blows up, you can't get compensation... ya dig? (Compensation for what? You never owned anything...)

It's never "Yours" it may be your temporary stomping grounds, but just like the alpha-wolf who roams "his" planes, his time will pass, and the land will stay.

Should've pursued that degree in business and scored yourself a nice trophy wife.

Whatever. I couldn't afford college. I started working and living on my own at 16. As for hot trophy wife, I'd rather have a sensible, loving woman who I respect and care for more than anything. Maybe I don't have the house in the suburbs with the picket fence, but I know I can survive in the forest or on the streets after a major cataclysm with little to nothing.

Who are you anyway?

House in suburbia?  :puke:

Having your own place is not hard to obtain.
You might have to pay off a 30 year loan...
but hey, if thats the illusion you want
the illusion of security and comfort...
well, i dont really blame you.

You simply have to choose what you want

Re: I WANT TO RETIRE [Re: CherryBom]

"When all of your wishes are granted, many of your dreams will be destroyed"

Man did I learn that lesson. Most of my life I have been pretty poor. I mean, when I was a young kid it was not uncommon for the electricity to be cut off, for the garbage man to stop picking up trash due to non-payment, etc. I had so many dreams of "when I get money I am gonna do...".

Well, several years later after working hard, owning a few businesses and selling them for good money I was able to do what I always dreamed of doing when I was a young buck. So I go ahead and do the things I thought would make me happy and after time I had the "Peggy Sue syndrome " where I asked, 'Is that all that there is'?

Be careful in what you wish for, it may come true.

Fantasies are just that, fantasies. Once they come true one will probably feel as though they've been ripped off, for the glitter is a whole light brighter in your dreams than in reality.

In retrospect I just wish that I would have learned how to feel comfortable being in my own skin rather than chasing after extraneous whims to make me happy.

Now I am in the process of re-learning just what makes me happy, without input from the visage of wealth and what MTv/Hollywood tells us what will make us happy.

Think, think, think.

Dude, I'm not talking about wealth and a big house with a fucking pool and tennis courts.

I want a little 2 bedroom house with a small yard for a garden...some extra space for the puppy and my cat, Maia, to run around and play. I want to know that I'm going to live there long enough to hang up some pictures on the wall and throw out the boxes I moved in with.

Maybe I do have unlearn what makes me happy. Maybe I'm destined to never own a couch or a kitchen table because they are too big to move around. That blows.

I want a living room set, cable TV and a phone number that sticks around long enough that someone out there can memorize it before it changes again. But above all this this stuff, I just want a home. A place to call my own.

Home sweet home.

i know this sounds really cliche, but maybe you are meant to go through this stage right now.  I've had people tell me this before when I wanted something I couldn't have, but always in hindsight I realized it was the best thing for me.

retirement for poeple is getting later and later, and people in their older ages that had a career and 'retired' are back to work again.  its an illusion for most people cause the system is set up that way.  maybe you should go with your gypsey flow and use that to your advantage.

or maybe I'm being too positive

my ex-girlfriend's parents had to move from yugoslavia to new zealand, and then to australia.  they just got a house 5 years ago, are in their middle age and will have a mortgage for the next 25 years. no hope for retiring at all. you just never know where life will put you next, and if you ahve a grand master plan has a good chance in ending in a grand master fail. Just from my experience, and I know this doesn't apply to a lot of people, but the more you have, the more you have to lose.

i know this is another point altogether, but I seriously don't see this system staying on its due course in the next 50 years, too much shit either environmental scale, economic scale, political scale or whatever.

if you're in your 30s and not in debt right now, good on ya!

--------------------
Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

For me, I still live with my family. I've got plans for the future but they seem so far away as if they will never be reached. I lack motivation to get things done and with knowing that It's hard to accomplish stuff around my house, but anyway. One day i'll own a house, have a girlfriend, no wives for me. I'm sre i'll change my mind and end up having children.

Good Luck on finding a home.
Peace.

There is undoubtedly a romantic allure to being a "gypsy".  There are cliche arguments to support the "gypsy" lifestyle such as having "freedom", being free of materialistic concerns, etc..  But, I have found that 80% of people who spout all of these anti-materialistic and vagabond ideas are full of shit.  The people that espouse these ideas most vociferously are usually the ones who sit around watching TV, fucking around on the internet, enjoying electricity, enjoying heat, enjoying modern shelter, etc..  In other words, they will disparage the "system" yet they wholeheartedly embrace the comforts that this system provides.

People like comfort.  People like stuff.  People like to be entertained.  There is nothing wrong with these desires and it takes money to get or do all three of these things.  And, in order to get money you need to work.

I have long suffered from "the grass is always greener" syndrome.  Whereever I am, I often wish I was somewhere else.  For example, I planned to go on a cross-country roadtrip for years.  I finally did it last summer.  I had a lot of fun and saw absolutely beautiful things.  But, after being on the road for two months I just wanted to go home and relax.  Being a wanderer is fun for a while, but eventually most of us will want a quiet and comfortable place to call home.

If you do want a comfortable house that has stuff in it you're going to have to work hard (especially if you will be paying for it alone).  All of this work will cause you to lose a lot of your time and a lot of your freedom.  That's the way it goes.   You can be lazy and have nothing or you can work hard and have something.  This is the blunt and harsh truth.

Real life is never perfect.  You must attempt to find a balance.  Whatever path you take, good luck.

This attitude really bothers me. It's like the "veteran" members of the Shroomery sometimes think that newer members, or those that they've never seen around or haven't met at a gathering don't have the right to speak. It's a message board, merit is on an intellectual basis. Granted, there's always the factor of seniority involved, but really, let's all be nice.

Back to the topic, I wish I had a place to call my own as well. As horrible as it sounds, when my grandparents die, they told me that I get their house. They're still 60 and 55, so I've got some time, but I absolutely LOVE their house. Of course, I'd rather have them, but at least it's something to look forward to during a time that will be very hard.

Back to the topic, I wish I had a place to call my own as well. As horrible as it sounds, when my grandparents die, they told me that I get their house. They're still 60 and 55, so I've got some time, but I absolutely LOVE their house. Of course, I'd rather have them, but at least it's something to look forward to during a time that will be very hard.

damn your grandperents are yunger then my perents... how old ARE you?

if i waited around for my perents to die... i think i'd kill them first

Turning 19 in August. My grandparents are REALLY young, they're a bit older than most of my friends' parents, in a few cases they are younger. Actually I think my grandma might be 61 or 62. My family has a bit of a problem using contraceptives, I guess.

:heartpump: i know exactly what your saying bom. All in time though i suppose? Once its been worked for so long its gotta be so much sweeter. At least thats how i see it

Mine are, too. How old are you? I'm 30. You seem to be around my age.
