This is intentionally Pub mix instead of Money matters.

Everyone here, assuming you are 18 and older - unless you plan to live of the fat of the land in some hippy commune, you should be thinking about retirement. Not when you're 25, 35, 45, not next year. You should be starting right now. How are you saving for your future retirement?

Ill start -

1. Am funding a yearly Roth IRA to its max contribution, $6000 each year
2. Slowly acquiring bullion, mainly Silver, some Gold, some Palladium/Platnum
3. Purchasing crypto assets, with a main focus on Bitcoin and ETH
4. Contributing to a 401k with matching - will be maxing this out at $19,000/year by next year.
5. Buying collectibles (mainly magic cards).
6. Funding a 529 education account monthy for our daughter

By next year my wife will hopefully be max contributing to her own ROTH IRA. If we can do the above consistently for the next 20 years, without any major market crashes, and maintain good health, we will be in pretty good shape.

Cool thing is that all these savings doesn't decrease our current quality of life. We still do pretty much everything we would want to do if we were just throwing all our extra money into a checking account. The difference is when it is in your checking you spend it on nonsense, and when it is in an otherwise untouchable retirement vehicle, you dont think about it. 20 years goes by pretty fast you pubbers. A lot of us will still be typing here on the shroomery about bullshit - the only difference is some of us will be retired, and other people will be like fuck, I need to start putting shit away.

Like most Americans, learning to live on a responsible budget.  As well as inheritance and investing in the family farm...that will be sold at some point.

I guess it depends on how long the family drags out their deaths.  Grandma and Grandpa don't have much and have been living for almost  88 years now.

My mom and step Dad have a good bit more.  Mom is terrible with money and is living more responsibly now that she doesn't make over 6 figures a year.  Both have had serious health issues (mom mostly, cancer 2x).  Step Dad has pretty good health right now.

Then again I might have a heart attack at 42.

I live paycheck to paycheck I don't use drugs and I stopped drinking two years ago. I will never be able to buy a house start a family or even go on a vacation. If there was ever a emergency like a medical or car one I would lose my job and likely become homeless. There will be no retirement for me I will work until I am no longer able to.

I am starting a 401k this month finally! Even tho I am late in the game at least I'm starting to think about retirement and whats gonna happen later in life. The shitty thing is with my income at the moment I'll prolly be working for most my life I guess that's what happens when you screw up your 20s on opiates I'm just thankful to be thinking about my future in my 30s at least and I'm also gonna be looking into getting into school for welding so hopefully if I do that I'll have more of a chance at retirement at some point.

No way Im ever saving enough for retirement. I'd rather live simply, not work a ton, travel and enjoy this crazy world while Im young and able. Probably will make my aging years tough, but nothing is guaranteed. Have had too many injuries and close calls to take things for granted.

I have no extra money to invest or set aside. Pension plans are dead and the financiers are raping the 401k funds (unbeknownst to most people saving for retirement)

I don’t plan on retiring anyway. I’ll be dead long before the time ever comes

I’m going to enjoy myself along the way, rather than waste my life doing shit I hate for people and companies that I hate in the hopes that I’ll be able to retire once I’m old, used up, and my health begins failing me.

Hell, I might live to see the end of our society and civilization as we know it. I’m not sure there’s anything left to bank on, the cracks are beginning to show

I put away a tiny amount monthly into a Roth ira and have owned personal real estate that this far I have been able to flip with decent appreciation. 

I would prefer to be better prepared but it is what it is.  In my experience life doesn't generally follow your plans anyways. 

Good friend of mine died like a year after retirement,  had everything lined up but I would guarentee that he would have done things completely different if he had known.  Life is like that. 

Just going to continue to try and balance life and responsibilities and enjoy it.  If anything really catastrophic happened I would be pretty shit out of luck,  that's how our society rolls,  no safety nets and people fall through the cracks all the time.

Not really planning for retirement. My house is worth almost $700,000 so hopefully I can sell that and my electrical contracting business then move somewhere cheap to die off. I make like $100 to $300,000 a year so I could just bust ass for a few years if I really had too and most of that money now either goes into my house or business. I could do a Walter White/Heisenberg thing too and really go out with a bang! My wife makes a lot of money to and she has a secure job so I don't think we will be struggling.

I'm the kind of guy that will know when it's getting close and I will go to the black muddy river or walk into the forest and die naturally. The animals will steal my carbon and I will live through them and the trees. I would like to live old and be healthy, but I have a feeling that isn't in the cards I've been dealt and I'm ok with that. Hopefully I will have something to leave behind for my son and wife by that time.

I used to be in the same boat, along with a lot of my friends. If you seen us in our party days you wouldn't think we would have made it to 27. but now we are mostly settled down and have houses and kids. Why are you living paycheck to paycheck? Why not work a few jobs for a while to get some "Fuck You" money and then move to a better job? It also sounds like you are working a dead end job. Never take a dead end job unless it is literally the only option, and if it is then you should move.

i had an ira, but i cashed it in a month ago (not much in it) to feel comfortable taking the summer off, in case i can't find side-work.  also have upcoming truck expenses, looming any day now.

i won't make it to retirement age.  i'll work until my body gives up or until the pain becomes too much, then i'll end things :shrug:


i like living my life on my own terms.  i'm taking care of family and watching how miserable they are in old/older age, despite being comparatively healthy.  i work a fairly dangerous job and could die any day out there.  i'm not having kids, so no financial responsibilities there.  i've watched my mom work her ass off and get nowhere in life.  my brother and his wife are working their asses off and getting no real place in life, as far as financial comfort.  it's a fucking scam.  live now, live for today.  it's better to burn out than to fade away.


i have reassurances that i'll have a place to stay, in the event i was ever to end up near homelessness, which is my biggest fear.

I used to think I was that guy until I became afflicted with a health problem that would’ve ended me. Then that instinct for self-preservation kicked in, and I was like, “Fuck the forest. I’m taking myself to the hospital.”

I guess if by some chance I do make it to a ripe old age, I’ll be that crazy old motherfucker robbing banks and doing heists and shit. The guy that they finally catch and send to prison who says, “I was broke and needed healthcare, so fuck you and the rest of society.”

My main concern are the extra expenses.  I have a dog who'll be 8 sept 30th.  So I try to put at least 200 or more away each month in accounts that slowly increase in value.

Only have so much there.  I don't own a car, so that's a big expense gone right there.  Yet an aging dog is at least a grand a year.  There's gonna be some bigger doggie expenses as he ages.  I brush his teeth twice a month and so far the vet hasn't want to clean them.

I groom him myself too, so that saves a bit over $100 a month.  I know, that's outrageous.

I won't ever do a full retirement from work. I will always have a physically productive source of income, that will be my retirement when the source is refined to my lifestyle. That's ive been working on now, I plan to be "retired" from "work and life expense" dependent slavery in a few years

I had a boss for a few weeks once.  Not sure where his money came from.  He owned a plane and two factories.  He had the nerve to tell his employees that social security is welfare.  Well, jobs like that don't have benefits.  The backbone of America benefits from social security.  What most employers don't offer.

Not everyone lands a great job with benefits.

I will inherit quite some money from my parents but my father in law recently sold his part of a substantial gas & oil company and is now what would by many be considered to be filthy rich.

Apart from that Im paying into my own pension plan and making sure I will have no debts when I retire. Chances are that I will not be working past my 50th birthday though

I am on disability im not allowed to save more then like 1000 dollars, there is one way, you can apply for a disability tax break, and if you get that, you are elligable for a to apply for a RDSP(regestered disability savings plan) and if you get a RDSP you can save money and the government will match it X3 when you retire


but I applied for a disability tax break and got denied, they thought I wasnt disabled enough, I didnt even want the tax break though, Its dumb you have to be on this tax break to apply for a RDSP, every needs retirement money

Ill probably try and get a job and just say fuck it about the disability money, I unfortently have good genes, all my grandparents lived till like 90, im gonna need retirement money, how will I afford a home when im too old to take care of myself

the only problem is every time I get a job I get super paranoid about my co-workers plotting against me or even when not bbeing paranoid, they tell me things I dont want to hear, one guy kept telling me about all the drugs he was doing and selling, and these stories of a violent friend of his

either that or maybe ill play the lottery, imgaine winning 50 million?, is start a church of fasting

im not into saving into a shoebox under my bed, I know someone who did that, 20k and his house burnt down and lost it all

plus I think technically im supposed to report any assets (gold) I have, although itd be easy enough to do without them knowing

I hoping to get hit by a car, or preferably something cooler like a huge train derailing. I don't care if I die, I just want it to be quick. Retiring sounds awful. Who wants to have all their money when they are old and useless? I feel bad enough wasting much of the time I already have

Some people rip on 401K funds and mock the 3 to 5% many companies match, but I would have saved nothing during the last 20 years if I had not regularly put a bit away in a 401K. I'm on track to have $200,000 when I retire in 12 years. The power of compounding interest is incredible. The general public has no clue how much they could save if they skipped some fast food meals or Starbucks or a few beers every once in a while.

I know people who are 60, 70, and 80 who are more engaged in a joyful life than many younger people.

I watched my grandfather as he readied himself to die. The only time I ever saw him cry was as I prepared to leave him on one of my last visits. The party was over and he wasn’t having any fun anymore

Seems like a waste to live your entire life for a respite at the end, part of which you’re going to spend in misery. But I’m not cut out for normal life, so my opinion is definitely biased and coming from a perspective most people will never be able to relate (and they’re probably better off  for not being able to relate).

I’m not sure you can claim to be working toward changing the current system if you’re dutifully plugging money into 401ks

Right now I max out my 401k each year.
I live in a high cost area, so my home is a big asset.
I'll be eligible for a pension at 55. If I took that pension it would be roughly 40k/year. I have a moderate plan to begin drawing that pension, then switch jobs and work while drawing it, but thats more than a decade away so who knows. I also have a modest stock portfolio.

My financial advisor sat me down with all his projections and I should be ok. In the worst case, I work in the scientific sector, so I don't do manual labor and should be able to work for an extended period of time, if necessary.

I did all that and got lucky enough to "retire" when I was 49. Now I'm trying to figure out how to get my retirement money into something that will still be worth something when the global economy tanks in a few years.

I'm investing in collectable varieties of San Pedro cacti. Not only do the individual cuttings continually increase in value, but they also increase in mass.

Also fortunate that my ancestors were pretty successful and I'm the only heir in my immediate family

What a wide range of responses, too much to respond to individually but ill hit some points people brought up:

Planning for retirement comes from the optimist in me. Yeah I could die early; ive already had cancer twice - but im not going to live like tomorrow is the last day. I'm a fighter, and would rather plan for the best than expect the worst. I have things to live for, and people I want to pass things to even if I did die. To die unexpectedly with retirement money in the bank, if the dice rolled that way, fuckit, at least my wife and daughter are taken care of. So yeah I dont like expecting the worst outcome, because that is not usually The outcome for most people. Most of us will live longer than we currently expect to.

I think the trick for some people and retirement planning is to try and make work its own retirement, if you can. Find a job that you enjoy so you dont feel like youre slaving away. Make it fun, and shape it to your needs of a work/life balance. Once you have that, you can kind of live partially retired, while planning for a more permanent one. Also, I've always been an advantage gambler, and putting money into investment vehicles feels kind of like 'smart' gambling. Its a lot slower than counting cards at a blackjack table, but I got time! The research of stocks, funds, or whatever, and then putting aside the money, and pulling the trigger on an investment - just makes the process fun. Doing it that way, I feel like saving for retirement is kind of exciting in and of itself. So yeah, thats my shpeal for tonight :smile:
