First-time grains question
    #26108215 -

When inoculating grains (rye berries) will a plain spore syringe inoculation not work? That is, must you necessarily use developed mycelium from agar? And if so, why is that?
Thanks.

Spore syringes often (usually? always?) contain bacteria, so syringe to grain inoculation is a bit of a crap shoot.

It usually always worked for me. I have a really good spore vendor though. If you can do it with PF cakes then you can do it with grain. People on here like to pretend like syringes have a 50% failure rate but they don't. You're better off using agar though. It's easy to make up so you might as well use it.

Yeah, thanks. The hassle is the many times the supplier is out of stock of a particular variety of prints, leaving syringes as the only resource, but yeah contamination is a bitch.

To give you a idea I've used 17 syringes. Only 3 gave me problems. 2 of those syringes was from a cheap spore vendor. That cheap spore vendor is unfortunately a sponsor on here. The other sponsors are really good.

You can still use syringes with agar.

So you have tried simple syringe inoculation with grains and it worked. I've done lots of cakes. That has always worked. I just made a complete batch of 12 jars with syringe inoculation and not one jar showed any signs of mycelium in 3 weeks. And nothing but contamination. That's why I asked. And I saw a professional grower online who has a commercial setup and said that agar was necessary for grains.

A great thing about agar is that you only need a drop of spore water.

PF cakes are a more resistant to contaminants than grains. I absolutely recommend agar tho.

Yes like I said it basically always works for me. Lots of people do it. I'm not making it up. You have to use a still air box, be clean and have a good vendor. You can still use your syringe with agar. Just use the agar...

I disagree with the assumption because you can get cakes to fruit with a spore syringe that means it will work with grain. Maybe sometimes. Is it against the rules to reveal the source of the syringes that work well for you? Probably, huh . . .

Did all 12 jars have the same problem? (regarding the visual and/or aromatic characteristics of the contaminant?)

I don't fuck with agar. Many times I've nocced grains with ms- open air even...straight blasphemy. I expect a 25% failure with my methods...big deal that's what? 1 dollar per run wasted, that still gives me a quarter pound easy. I would recommend agar though. Just cause I have bad habits don't mean i should teach them to others.

Also, I always do my first grow on invitro rice to get clean prints, and treat those as single use items. That probably helps in my half assed methods

I know. It's been a while since I actually grew. Damn criminal charges and all. I will if(when) I do again. But, back then I supported a family of 4 on 1000 a month. I did it as cheap as possible. Hell, i used popcorn as grain because i could buy with foodstamps. Seriously. I was poor. I know selling is frowned upon...but i sold an ounce to pay for it. I sold that shit on credit so I could pay for everything.

Not nearly as poor anymore. I'd definitely fuck with agar next time. But still, it worked pretty damn well for me. I'd get laughed out of here if i posted my tek i followed for my first bulk grow

If you don't want to fuck with agar, you can remove a tiny in-vitro pin from a cake jar and throw it into a jar of sterilized grain. Then you have a cloned fruiting body and you're off to the races (grain to grain transfers to scale up). It's a lazy poor man's tech, but it's worked well for me numerous times.

Eh...agar would be easier than a grain jar. and cheaper.  I would just nocc abatch of 12 jars, and expect 3 to fail. Still gives me 9 good jars, which works out to almost a pound. I considered that acceptable. But, my prints were probably cleaner than average. That probably helped. I don't think much more would have been acceptable

It doesn't matter what you agree with because I know that you're wrong lol. It's more than sometimes. I swear to Oden that I got great results from syringes. Why would I lie about that? I want as many mushrooms in this world as possible. I even told him to use the agar. The syringes that I get are so packed with spores that it wouldn't surprise you that I get growth. Its probably the highest ranked vendor on here and anyone that knows me on here knows who I'm talking about. I just did 28 truffle jars with syringes and every single one has colonized with no signs of contaminations. I shit you not. For cubes and truffle strains syringes worked everytime but it didn't work for panaeolus cyanescens. So DO NOT try it with panaeolus cyanescens because it doesn't work very well I promise you. I'll probably never use syringes again because I now have prints but it worked really good for me. Maybe I had good luck, who knows. When enough people grow mushrooms at least a few people are going to get lucky. I think it's actually just having a good vendor.
