Grain jar condensation
    #26089952 -

Jar has a 3/8 air exchange hole, covered with a whole SFD. Grains were completely dry when loaded into jars and PC'd. The grains came out with no moisture against the glass.

During colonization some condensation would build up around the agar wedge where the grains were colonizing, but would dissipate later in the day. I sleep with the temperature slightly cooler at night, around 65° at night, low 70's during day. so I think the slight temperature swing may be causing some of the condensation.

How does this jar look to you guys? Would you try a larger air exchange hole to help vent the condensation? (1/2" or 5/8"?) Or try to keep the room temperature more stable? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated as well.

Still use it though. Don't turf it out. You still might get lucky.

I kinda thought that with the wet grains on glass, but it's only 95% colonized. I was going to give a minimum 48 hours and make sure those grains fully colonized before spawning to a shoebox.

Same fate on these 2 jars as well?

I've been preparing for an outdoor bed, would you shoebox or just spawn outdoors?

Edit: to fix image

Here is one grain jar maybe 4or5 days after inoculation. No excessive moisture, no condensation on the sides of the glass.

What size air exchange hole are you guys currently using on your quart grain jars? And what filter method?

Looks like condensation to me.

You wanna be sure the jars are good? Shake them up and see how they recover. That will tell you all you need to know.

If it's just condensation the jars should fully recover pretty quick.

Something I’ve been doing recently is putting a small handful of dry oats in my jars prior to PC.  Has helped with excess condensation.

I'll post a recovery pic in 24hrs...

also i drilled some lids with different sized holes (3/8, 1/2, 5/8, and 3/4"), so my next batch of grains will be a bit of an experiment to see what size does best with my conditions without excessively drying the grains.

Bod recommends 3/8 to 1/4 for ge holes in lids.

I would just pick something and stick to it, for the sake of consitancy.

Beside unless your running a isolate or clone, you can't really know if it was the culture or your variable. You may just end up with a vigorous culture in one jar and a slower one in another. You got a run the same isolate side by side to get results you can use.

I've read that, and a lot of the popular teks. I've been here a while, thanks. That particular thread is about polyfil lids as well, I'm using a SFD, so not really apples to apples either. Tek says 1/4 to 1/2. Then he goes on the reccomend 3/8" as his personal max.

Not my first run, in the past I consistently used 3/8" hole. And in the past would always get condensation during final colonization. They were all more or less like this one, but they'd do fine so I never posted.

This is my first run in a few years, just thought I'd ask and see if anyone would increase air exchange in this jar. And ask what size hole and filter method they are currently using because people adjust over time and might not update or make a tek.

I'm not concerned with how vigorous the culture is or how fast it will colonize the jar, or spawnability. The only results I'm looking for are condensation build up during colonization (not speed), and when I spawn, squish a few oats and gauge its moisture content after full colonization. Thanks again though.

Yeah, so condensation throughout the jar can be a sign of bacteria, sweety jars. Generaly when I have great jars the condensation is only at the top above the grain. And the jar in the Op looks bacterial to me. So this might be where I start if I was you.

Because the jars are warmer then their surroubdings, I imagine some condensation is inevitable.

I've been using unmodded plastic lids for the last 6 or 7 months. I'm almost positive any issues I've had has been from failures in my sterile procedures and not the lids. I've been thinking of making lids with sfd, because the plastic is starting to bend in on some of them.

So there was a thread a month (or 2?) About ge hole sizes and materials. The person made different filters of different sizes and then filled the jars with smoke to see how quickly they "aired out". Maybe I can find it

I get condensation in my jars too. especially in the summer because i'm running ac to combat heat and the mycelium in the jar is generating some heat as it grows. And that lil bit of heat increases at the myc grows. So that slight increase in temp within the jar mixed with the cool air conditioned air in the room results in more condensation build up as time progresses.

And that condensation can build up to the point that it slides down the jar and can look like bacteria. I've even had it start to pool slightly in the bottom of jars if the ac is going hard and its real hot outside for a few days.

Just condensation won't hurt anything. That's why I say give the jar a shake. If it's clean it'll recover just fine as well as taking care of any uncolonized grains.

And if it was bacteria, it'll tell you that too. :super:

Thank you lotkid, very helpful.

Maybe I'm just being too OCD about the condensation if that's all it is.

Here is a 24hr recovery pic. The lighting is overcast today, I should probably take pics under artificial light for comparison. Still quite a bit of moisture in there.
