Massive total electrical blackout in Argentina and Uruguay * 2
    #26055375 -

This seems really crazy. The last few hours Argentina and Uruguay have been without any electrical service nationwide. Total blackout.

Argentina and Uruguay left without power in massive outage Millions of people have been affected by a massive power failure in Argentina which is also impacting Uruguay.

They were always on my do not visit list anyway.

Religious conviction to government causes this. We're probably next

Key sentence of the BBC coverage: "It came as people in parts of Argentina were preparing to go to the polls for local elections."

I'm with Repo-man this is a practice exercise.

My guess is that it's the US doing a full-scale test in preparation for the 2020 elections. Take out the grid for a week or so, send in the troops to "maintain order", and reschedule the election at the earliest "possible" time. Election laws here are a piecemeal clusterfuck of the 50 states and excess baggage of territories. While the federal government can impose its will upon the states one state cannot do so to another. Currently 30 states are controlled by Republicans. Wanna guess what's gonna happen?

Hell yeah. Its a recipe for mass chaos on a country-wide level. Its not looking good. Anyone know the cause of the power outage?

Power is a government owned utility in those countries. They also artificially kept the price of electricity low for decades and stopped that a while back with a new president. So now they've got a third world grid in a second world country. Praise government!

my friend lost power for like 3 months after a really bad ice storm. most of the state lost it for like a week or more. I was lucky I was only out for a few hours. Luckily my town has it's own private power plant for the town so we always have very cheap rates and we u know pay ppl to trim trees and stuff. :flowstone:

My dad was dying during that 8 day blackout and died three days later. It was a complete disaster. 1 million people lost power in the capital of the United States. Natural monopolies should not be in the hands of private companies. PEPCO refused to do the proper maintenance to their system because they are beholden to the shareholders. Maintenance cuts into their profits. One big storm and they the power lines just came tumbling down. Out power ended up being restored by a crew from Florida because PEPCO couldn’t handle it. Other neighbors had the power restored by Hydro Quebec (state run by the way)

The US has one of the most unreliable electrical grids in the world . Argentina got their power back in 8 hours.

Quote:
In December, Maryland’s Public Service Commission levied a $1 million fine, its largest in recent memory, against Pepco for failing to keep up with tree-trimming and other preventive maintenance that could limit power disruptions due to storm damage.

In the aftermath of the June storm, unreturned calls or ones directed to automated answering services, along with conflicting reports about the timeline for power restoration, were at the heart of consumer complaints.

Hundreds of thousands of people in and around Washington fled or hunkered down in sweltering, darkened homes with no idea when the lights — and, more important, the air conditioning — might return.

Similar reports made public Monday by other utilities in Maryland show that Pepco customers were not alone in their misery. In the District and in Maryland, Pepco had a total of 483,639 customers without power at the peak of the outage. Baltimore Gas and Electric, which serves Baltimore and its suburbs, had 429,841 customers affected.

According to the reports, Pepco had all its customers back online by 4:30 a.m. on July 8, more than a week after the storm. BGE had full restoration at 2 p.m. that day. The average outage time for Pepco customers was about 26 hours; for BGE customers, it was 37.5 hours.
