How blue is blue?
    #26044381 -

Hey, noob question. Found (what I believe is) Psylocibe subaeruginosa the other day - posted here and a few others confirmed. Just to be 100% I wanted to check what is considered 'blue'? The ones I picked and checked seemed blue but more grey-blue, like a darkish gunmetal kind of colour? Is that okay? I suspect, in my noob enthusiasm, I likely crushed the stem rather than bruising it which may have been a factor.

What are people's experience of the colour range and what kinds of blues should we look for?

Apologies if this has been asked to death, did a forum search first but couldn't find much specific.

Bluing means a colour change after they have been damaged in some way. Some mushrooms may have a blue colour naturally but this is not to be confused with blue staining/bruising - no matter how much you damage them they will not get any more blue. A steely blue colour which does not change and has a rusty brown spore print could mean Cortinarius rotundisporus which is often confused with Psilocybe subaeruginosa, but we can't tell you what you have without seeing the pictures. Please post pics of the ones in question.

Ah, of course, sorry. This is probably the best pic I took the other day of what I am talking about. It was a white/greyish stem and definitely a colour change after handling. It just didn't seem "blue" as I might otherwise define it and wanted to be sure I am not just projecting it and being creative, especially if I try to find more in the future.

Spore print was also a very dark purple.

Cheers

Thanks! Very much appreciated.

Just to double check I understand, you're saying I need to look for that colour change, more than a specific shade of blue? Amongst all the other psylocibe identifiers of course.

In short, yes. There are some mushrooms that are blue or purplish in colour but no matter how much you beat them up they will never get any more blue. From my experience on this forum, the mushrooms from your part of the world that people most often confuse with Psilocybe are Cortinarius spp. You should familiarise yourself with species such as Cortinarius rotundisporus and Cortinarius archeri, which will have a reddish brown or rusty brown spore print rather than purple-brown. Not all mushrooms that bruise blue, by the way, are psychoactive and some could be poisonous, so don't take it for granted that if you find a mushroom that bruises blue that it is psychoactive, you need to look at all the features.

Good to know. Those Cortinarius mushrooms are beautiful!

Many thanks.
