About to setup a couple bulk tubs after almost ten years of not growing
    #25984659 -

Hey everyone, so I am brand new to this forum, but I was hoping to pick everybody's brain a bit.  My first few batches many, many years ago were your basic pf cakes.  When I stopped (probably about 8 years ago) I was using Rubbermaid's of bulk sub, and that's what I am going to jump right back to.
In the past, I have had great success with quart jars of popcorn added to a 50/50 worm castings/coco coir mix.  Since it has been so long, I thought I would freshen up my memory by cruising some forums and it seems like everyone here thinks popcorn basically sucks for bulk sub.  Now I never had any problems, and I liked the ease, but I also never tried anything else, so I can't really say it's better than other grains.
I noticed everyone seems to like Frank's teks, and he uses oats.  So my question is this: I already have my spore syringes, I was about to buy some popcorn at the grocery store, is there another grain that is really that much superior that I should use it instead?  Any advice is appreciated, thank you in advance.

Whole oats are really good and run like $10-15 for 50 pounds of it, works wonderfully and I can link you a TEK that explains everything perfectly

Personally I like wheat more than oats, if you're talking about FrankHorrigan he used WBS as far as I can remember

Oats work great for many people (myself included) i just prefer wheat and get it cheaper

After checking these posts I started shopping around for oats and didn't have much luck.  Because of the weight, shipping charges are ridiculous, and the closest place I could find any to buy in person is an hour drive each way.  Not to say that I am not willing to make that drive, but is it really worth it?
sh4d0ws, you mentioned wheat being cheaper, is there any particular kind of wheat I need to look for?  And I am sorry, I have been out of the game for a long time, wbs is bird seed, right?  Thanks again for all of the help.

Say if you took that drive and picked up two 50lb bags for under $40 you’d bet set for the year

I can't believe I didn't think of this before, there is a home brew shop just a bit down the street from me, I know I can get all kinds of grains from them, that would work, right?  What does everyone think?  And I use coconut coir, and yes, it comes in blocks.

I'd venture to guess you have a local tack and feed store, should be $15-$20 for a 50 lb bag.

Stay away from anything roasted. Home brew stores also have malt powders for agar/lc:thumbup:

Unfortunately, "my local tack and feed store" is the hour drive each way I mentioned.  City boy.  Hence the worm castings.  OK, brew shop is no good.  So it sounds like I have my answer.  Thanks everyone, it may not have been what I wanted to hear, but it was what I needed to.

Ouch. Well, wild bird seed is another popular alternative and with mushboy's 24 hour soak TEK dead easy. People are also shredding BRF cakes into tubs and bulk spawning those too.

Oats and coir with a pressure cooker. I use Bods unmodified tub tek. Results are fantastic. Easy peasy. Just gotta manage proper surface conditions, ensure level substrate, and make sure its 4 inches of spawn/sub. Good luck!
