There are tons of amazing electric bass players out there, all with their own original styles, who I can't seem to ever get enough of..by that I mean, studying their methods, learning their music, in an effort to improve my own.
I don't usually like the idea of singling one guy out from the rest, but for this post I will..one guy in particular who I am sure many of you are familiar with. A guy whos style I really can't seem to find enough words to describe..Having come right out of Canada (this actually surprised me) Not to mention he's been playing with the same two guys for the past 30 years and still going strong...The man I refer to is Geddy Lee from Rush.
These guys will be starting their 30 year anniversary tour this year, and I just found out they will be coming my way in august. (well..a 5 hour drive away =/) I'm sure as hell gonna do my best to not let this possible chance in a lifetime opportunity pass me by.
Anyway, for anyone interested, here is one of my favorite songs (among others of course) displaying Geddy's breathtaking ability on his main instrument. (the man takes care of the vocals, bass and synth during live performances) With Alex Lifeson on guitar, Neil Peart on drums, this amazing trio never ceases to blow my mind.

Completely different styles, my friend. 
Your right though, Wooten is one of the best, no question there. Flea and Les are also awesome at what they do. What about Jaco??

i agreee about the different styles, and each are the best in there own genre...but geddy lee, and rush have never been something i've liked...
I'm a huge music lover, and I just can't dig them.. I dont know why

Yeah, I can see where your coming from. Not everybody likes any one band or genre, I'm sure..
I bet we could go on listing tons of great bassists, but I just made this post out of excitement for the upcoming tour!

Since we're on the topic of bass players.....
Victor Wooten is, in my opinion, today's most skilled bass player.
I recommend anyone who hasn't heard him before to download some of these songs:
-Classical Thump
-Me and my bass guitar
-You can't hold no groove
-Overjoyed
-A show of hands
-Amazing grace
Oh man the list goes on. And also check out his basswork with Bela Fleck and the flecktones. Incredible.
Also try to find some stuff by a guy named Ray Riendeau. He's got a style very similar to Wooten's, and in some senses, even surpasses his technical ability.
Sorry, I know this is a tribute thread to the great Geddy Lee, but jesus I just couldn't help myself. People must be enlightened to the possibilities of the bass guitar!
Also... Stuart Hamm!

oteil burbridge [(sp?) he played with col. bruce hampton and the aquarium resucue unit and is now with the allman brothers]
larry grahm (this man invented thumping for god's sake!!!)
john paul jones
there is a place in nashville called 3rd and lindsley. the wooten brothers play there every wednesday night. go check it out if you are ever in the area. it is a mecha for amazing bassists. i have had the pleasure of playing with vic, oteil, an amazing bassist named kieth horn, paul chapman, among many others there. i recommend going the wednesday before NAMM, which is usually around july 23.

hehe, right on, this thread can go in any direction it very well pleases.. (though hopefully it's remains in the realm of bass)
I'm definitely going to check out Bela Fleck, for some reason that name isn't ringing a bell =/
Among the others already listed above:
Bill Dickens is also quite an insane thumping/slapping/percussive bass player, aswell..the guy is HUGE and his main bass is a 7 string monster!
Jaco Pastorius...been said, i know...
John Myung of Dream Theater..

Without a doubt. His sense of melodicism is excellent, and he is capable of speeds pretty damned impossible... he has perfect technique and always hits the right note, so to speak.
Cliff Burton should probably be mentioned, I would think...  Super fuckin' technique, with quite the sense of melody as well. Did a lot of composition work as well, definitely a musicial genius. 
And then there is me, posessing all of the above traits and more! Definitely one of the best, I am.

meh, I don't think hes that bad. Alot of his stuff does sound pretty repetitive, especially those triplets..I've never had a chance to take lessons, so him and flea are pretty much how I learned thumping and slapping by mimicking their styles..there is probably better, but he definitely has some skill..IMO anyway..
But damn, as if Wooten and those guys are playing weekly in Nashville..I wonder if they would ever plan on touring?? I'd love whitness a night of awesome bass players perform. It seems bassists are pretty much non existant in my area

Hell yeah! How could Cliff Burton have not been mentioned yet..
Finger style > Pick IMHO..
There are exceptions, of course...depending on the situation

Well there is some song Tyr played on that he held straight sixteenth notes at I believe 240 bpm for three minutes straight... and Tyr is not a pick player at all.
So technically, anything you can do with a pick you can do with fingers... there are also some fills of his that are, in fact, impossible with a pick. When the song is 175 bpm and he is holding straight sixteenths and then does a fill consisting of a pattern of 5thlets, a pattern of triplets, and another pattern of 5thlets, and that triplet pattern has notes on two different strings... at THAT speed... a pick fails.
However, I do like using a pick because of the clarity and precision. I think it is interesting to note that Justin Chancellor of TOOL uses a pick a lot, even though the parts he plays with a pick aren't anything he could do finger style. Its all about the tone and the preference...
And, of course, Cliff Burton, who started the whole talented, metal bass stuff, didn't use a pick either... can you say Pulling Teeth?

Steve DiGiorgio - Played on a few Death albums(Human, Individual thought patterns),has also played in numerous other bands. Plays fretless and pickless.
