MATTHEW GARRISON!!!

If you have not heard Matthew Garrison, but you have decided on your favorite bassist, you might have to change your mind!  IMO, the best composition, technical, and soloing skills by FAR.  Get both of his albums from www.garrisonjazz.com.  I like the first one a little more, but they are both amazing.

his daddy wasnt a slouch either :smirk:

Well, I have to give you credit automan for the original post. Some greats there too. I recently saw Oteil and his solos floored me. A similar vibe to Matt G. I wonder how many people who posted are bass players?

i am a bassist. well, i used to be. i dont get alot of time to play much anymore. i toured for years with various people. some you have heard of, some you probably havent.

if you ever get the chance, there is a kid from long island named mitch cohn that plays with a group called the waking vision trio. man, this kid is awesome. i got the chance to hang out with him at his pad when he was going to berklee. not only does he have the gift to be one of the best bassists of his generation, but he is also one of the coolest people on the planet.

Did you go to Berkley?

I have a theory.  The people that make Claypool #1 could be bassists, but don't have much theory background.  The people that idolize Flea probably aren't bassists.  No offense, this is just my experience.

Too bad I'm not in the long island area  :frown:

Definitely check out Ben Allison and the Jazz Composers Collective (in your area).  The best albums are "peace pipe" and "buzz".  Really chilled out beautiful pieces.

Nice chatting!
