tool is not about negativity, it's about positivity. there may be negative aspects in some of the lyrics, but that doesnt mean it's a negative thing.

anyone who precieves tool as negative, in my opinion, does not pay much attention to the music they listen to. That or they simply do not have much capacity for precieving depth in music. I think negativity is something that skims the surface of some tool songs in order to deter listeners who are not ready to recive the messeges delivered in thier music.

Not to bring anyone down here but, I also find that Tool is inaccessible to me because they are overly heavy and angry sounding. Lately I've been making an effort to try and appreciate them, and I can tell that they are talented artists, but their style/sound is really silly and off-putting to me.

I can appreciate heavy music to an extent - I like, say, KMFDM or Jane's Addiction, but I find that Tool generally sounds like music for angsty teenagers. To me they sound like a slightly deeper version of bands like RATM or Linkin Park. Several Tool songs actually include the singer yelling (not lyrics, just yelling) at the top of his lungs for long periods - its really silly. I never liked Nirvana very much for the same reason.

Did anyone else find that Tool's angsty sound was a barrier to understanding and appreciating them?

I realize that no band is for anybody, but you just put rage and lincoln park in the same sentence, and described tool's music as more "angsty" than Janes addiction, and all I can say about that is -  :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

That was cute man, thanks

I gotta' say, I agree about most dark metal bands... but Tool is different.

I love 'em.

They trancend rock... but they require a close listen, and unlike most rock bands, Tool is best when the volume is towards the mid-range. Too loud, and you miss Tool's intensity (and I usually, crank my tunes).

As for being negative, I disagree. They are quite positive. They remind me of a Metal Pink Floyd. They may go dark places, but if you listen to the whole song or album, you will be returned to a good place in the end.

I trust Tool.

Listen to Lateralus on 5-6 grams of some quality shrooms. It was one of the darkest times I've ever had tripping, but it was exactly what I was looking for and was what I truly needed at the time. Yes they are dark, and yes they scream (sometimes, not all the time) but its all for a reason. During the song Reflection, I've never gone deeper while tripping than I did during that song, what a fucking song!!

I will say this however, Tool fans are some of the dumbest people I've ever met. I actually worked with a guy that bought a Tool shirt for his chihuaha. It was fucking pathetic.

I wouldn't go as far as buying a Tool shirt for my animal. I have several Tool shirts myself.

I prefer tripping to Undertow. <<<is my fave!
