Bod's Bucket Tec for Choir not working well. What can I do?

Hello Friends,

I have been trying to reproduce Bod's Bucket Tec for Choir.

I used professional PC bags to PC the grain substrate. The bags were fully colonized with Cub. Until this point I think I had it right. I even PC'ed the choir. (maybe that's my mistake?) When I mixed the colonized grain with the choir I used a cover layer. I had it sit for 3 weeks around 70 degrees in a sealed box and gotten the results shown in photos.

I have the suspicion that humidity was too high. Once the Water drips down from the ceiling of the box to the cover layer, it seems to go bad. This has happened twice now.

I would be great to get your input as to what is going wrong.

No pics. If the coir didn't colonize the spawn was probably bad

Weird, I was under the impression I uploaded two pics. There are two pics that show uploaded but why don't they appear? I also tried the image symbols but this way it wants me to give an URL for the image. I'll try to add them in below. Next was to upload a file but it wont let me upload image files. Not sure what I am doing wrong here.

Thank you for your quick response. Could you give me some details what bad spawn means? It seemed healthy and fully colonized in the bag. Smelled good. I had the impression though that the colonization process was slow for both the grain and for the tub. It went somewhere in the tub for the first week. I could see it on the sides pictured in the second image. But then I think it went bad.

@ Mushboy: I put it into the tub three weeks ago. It was in a pc'ed bag for another three weeks prior. Seemed slow to me too. But looked healthy. Its been years since I have done this last dont remember the timing etc. Lots changed too. I'll attach a pic of the grain I used but have no pic of what it looked like colonized.

honestly, the mold usually comes from the spawn. your mold looks like mold from improperly pasteurized casing.

but coir is the exception and doesnt mold the way peat based casings do:shrug:

i ment pics of the colonized grain spawn not a bag of oats:lol: dont seal up tubs.

That's weird. The sub looks super dry. Your spawn bags were probably moldy. Was this done with multispore injection?

As far as PC subs go I sterilize ccvg (coir, coffee, vermiculite, gypsum) in oven bags with zero issues and enjoy 5 to 10 day colonization times depending on the strain. I don't cover or seal tubs, I set them in a separate closet with no fan until colonized and transfer to the closet with fans for fruiting. Some people disagree with coffee grounds because it can invite mold but I'm getting four plus healthy flushes per tub. It all starts with the grain spawn. Healthy spawn = happy tubs.

Try adding vermiculite to your grain next time to control moisture and streak some agar because the bacteria may be coming from the syringes themselves. If you streak agar and it's clean in a week the syringe is good, if not isolate away from the bacteria,  peroxidated agar can help with this, just remember to transfer again in a week as it's not for long term storage. Never make an LC or Grain master directly from antibiotic agar.

The first image looks completely weird to me. Is the growing thing kind of grey instead of white?

Understand. I have to wait until next time to send pics of a bag. My bags colonize slowly too. I did PC the coir for 1.5 hours @18psi. I did let it air for 10 min as well.

I was under the impression the substrate is too wet. Its just the pic. There was large amounts of condensation on the sides of the box after I mixed the spawn with the coir and put it into the box.

The not sealing of my tub might be my mistake. This is the second time I have those symptoms. I was planning to take the cover off when its fruiting time just like in Bod's explanations. But as far as I understood, for colonization it is supposed to stay closed. (?)

The spawn seems to be my issue since the slow colonization times are already a problem then. I had jars before. Took a month or more to colonize. (Cupensis)

Wait, did you mix coir in the bags with your grains before the PC cycle? Or you PC'ed the coir for when you spawned? Curious cause the reference to the bucket tek in the original post.

I use a cooler like Bod does, run 2 bricks at a time with no vermiculite and no other additives and I don't get many issues and usually it's traced back to the olonized spawn and even if I can't trace it back to spawn it was probably the spawn and something that slipped by. I have enough success with the bod's version of the tek that it's hard for me to believe issues arise from it.

Coir is just damn resistant, I've even sterilized it for multiple hours in the oven at 165F before doing the bucket tek and it still works.

My steps are basically the same as Bod's tek with a deviation in the amount of water used :

I preheat my cooler with boiling hot water while the water for mixing with the coir heats up, then let it sit for 2-3 hours stirring at 1-2 hour mark and then when cooled I go to town)

I use eco earth and only 2.6 litres water per brick. It gets it just right for me, but you should probably weigh your bricks and find the best ratio of water to get your moisture capacity dialed in perfectly

I didn't mix the choir with the spawn initially. I made spawn in bags then PC'ed the choir even at 18psi for 1.5hrs. about 1 brick per box.

Next time you reproduce the bucket tek, try to use the bucket tek. Its legit. And keep working on getting clean, vigorous cultures/spawn. Good luck on the next one.

Hello Mushboy,

here is a pic of my grains in a bag.





Seems not contaminated but still doesn't grow past a certain point. Did I perhaps use not enough liquid from the syringes? The temp in my growing location was 65 degrees. So I created a water bucket underneath the growing bucket that was heated to the point of consistent 73 degrees in the growing bucket. There is also a small pump.

I got the suggestion to next time use the bucket tec, implying I am not, I think.
