I'm so confused. You're saying people were wrong to warn you, but haven't even gotten past first signs of germination? You're not done yet, barely even started.

No one says spores>grain doesn't work. It was the norm at one point. The warning is it has a high fail rate, and even "good" jars are often somewhat bacterial.

Agar cuts those losses out and gives cleaner good jars, there's no reason not to use agar.

/e Looks like what you did here, was look up a bunch of old, outdated posts by respected contributors using this method when it was the norm to justify going this route. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone with reputation recommending that method today given the wide spread use and superiority of of agar.

Ok most of us who say dont do that say it cause your results wont be consistent... those jars look bacterial already to me and the grain seem over hydrated ... most of the stuff we try to do is help you get consistent results not hey out of 100 jars I grew 20 you know? Of course spores to grain works and of course the methods you used work as well but they aren't practical anymore then wiping your ass once and pulling up your drawers ...


Spores to agar is done for making sure growth is clean.  Why spend money on spores to waste them? One drop of spore solution on agar will make you 10000000000 jars of grain ...


The reason people try to steer you clear of certain teks are because those proved to fail more times then not ...

It's like drinking a 30 pack of beer then driving, how many times do you think you could do it before getting arrested or injured or both or worse??? Even if your friends uncles dads cousins girlfriends grandad did it his whole life doesnt mean 30 other people didnt go very long....


Point is sure all of your jars may be good and you get some grows but I would bet you 1billion dollars you could recreate those same results twice .. but I could tell you how to grow the same results a billion times over doing it the right way

All I'm gonna say is the amount of moisture in those jars would have me very concerned.

Other than that, you can't swim till ya get in the water and hope to see your final results turn out ok in a couple months.

Lastly, a lot of folks here have filled in a lot of the blanks and deeper explanations that are not noted in quite a few teks here. A good reason to read the discussions in the threads of the Teks. Such as: BOD is not a fan of Paul Stamets. :oogle:

Edit- Boogie is talking about the grains with wet around them doing this. :bottledup:

Yes, this forum is full of people making matter-of-fact statements saying "never go MS syringe into Rye" or "Rye is too difficult to get correct" or "Rye isn't for beginners"



I rarely see people say any that. Most by a long shot tell you the same thing I did. It can work, but it sucks. I've never seen anyone say "Rye isn't for first grains" that's ridiculous. Grains are grains.

This part is complete bullshit in this context and exactly what I mean I was said you're reading old outdated material by respected contributors. Yes, RR and Spit ball have done Syringe to Grains, when it was the norm, not after agar became ubiquitous.

Hell you put bod up there, why don't you message him. Bet he'll tell you the same thing.

As far as success vs failure. I gave Syringe to grains a trial run just to see, my losses were roughly 33%. Huge jump up from less than 10% with agar.

I still think you're reading old posts. "don't do it you're wasting your time" makes sense, the 100% failure, maybe but sounds more like exaggeration.

Ships don't matter. You'd open to innoc with wedges inside a SAB, it's fine. Contams come from the spores in the syringe, SHIP aint doing anything for that. This sounds like some old comment to me.

Yeah I'm not trying to seem like a hater I thought you were trying to act like since a few jars colonized that we would reverse all that we have accomplished to go back to the stone age...


The greasy grain is a sign of over hydrated and or bacterial grain ... 


And there are tons of people who go spores to grain with results but let's say you get all 96 to colonize and grow I bet it wouldnt happen again In a million years


Yeah OP you are stating things that basically are saying one thing and you may not say something specific but you might as well

Just because you did not bring up agar, or claim this method is as good, doesn't mean agar isn't relevant to the post or discussion. People are still right to point out, this route is inferior and discouraged because of agar's advantages.

A large focus here is on getting the most of your grow, not just get by with whatever. A side effect of that is people pointing out that these subpar practices like spore>grain and kits suck in comparison to current practices.

I don't doubt if you did that many jars you probably will get some mushrooms(unless all your jar prep fails, lookin wet). Some might end up looking good. You're playing the odds and bought a shit ton of tickets.
But the method is still wasteful, low BME(if you calculated it). So people will try to steer you away from it even if you show a couple nice tubs eventually.
