Paul Stamets new outdoor cultivation method..
    #6462165 -

Hi,

I just watched a video of a lecture by Paul Stamets in which he talks about a new super-easy method of outdoor shroom cultivation using cardboard and a piece of a mushroom stem. Is this documented somewhere? If it is, please, someone point me in the right direction...

Thanx

I got no documentations, however i do it all the time and it works. Well i get mycellium growth should i say. Still working on the fruiting part.

It is best to soak the cardboard in some water and hydrogen peroxide at a 30:1 ratio (about that) Then take your mushroom stem or cap, they both work, and roll it up inside the cardboard, and place in a jar or plastic bag. Leave at room temp and watch it take over the cardboard. This technique is only for Saprphtic mushrooms.

I hear it is better to tear off any ink or printing on that may be on the cardboard. Corrigated works best.

Saprophytic mushrooms grow on dead or docomposed matter. Their primary job is to decompose.

Thanks a lot!
are you talking about sheets of cardboard? do you know if there are any pictures of this?
From what I picked up from Paul's words, after putting the stem part between sheets of cardboard this whole thing can be put outside in soil and it will take on and grow... Maybe i am mistaken but I got this impression.

Well theoretically it will work. But if any other mushroom mycelium is growing where you plant your cardboard, it would most likely be killed or taken over by the larger mycelia mat. Or loose in its fight for food.

If you grow your cultures out on the cardboard first, and wait till the mycelium has taken over, it is larger and has a better chance to survive when you transplant to a outdoor chip bed. However i am taking my cardboard cultures and transplanting them into jars of chips, sawdust, vermiculite, and brown rice. Once thees jars are fully colonized, then i will move them into a large Tupperware with more food for it to eat. Once the springtime comes and my Tupperware is fully colonized, then i will transplant to my outdoor bed, water throughout the summer, and pray for fruits.

What are you attempting to make cultures of?

I wrote a long, long reply earlier but I find that it's missing :frown:
Anyway, thanks for the info!

I am just starting out so I am still in the process of gathering/accumulating info. I live in the mountains and it is just forests and meadows all around. I plan to start with cubensis cultivation at home, but my aim is to learn how to transfer this in the open. In fact I am almost sure that we have a lot of shrooms around here anyway, but I got interested in this very recently -  exactly at the time most mushrooms disappeared for the winter  So, I'll be around in these forums for sure. Right now I am waiting for the first grow kit I ordered and will try to experiment with it a lot.
