Maybe you shouldn't steal video cards.

She gave it to me.

I looked at my post and saw a reply and hoped that my problem would be solved by yet another helpful and informed member of the shroomery.

So, thanks.

Sorry.

Well, you could check your
display properties (right
click on your desktop, go to
properties.)
There should be a settings
section for your video card.
In that section you can select
"Apply to DOS." You don't want
it applied to DOS so make sure
it's not applied to DOS.
That's what I would do.

Which DOS do you try to enter? The win98 shell, or a different boot partition, or a floppy? Also, at what point in the 'entry' does it lock?

The windows' shell of DOS.

If I bypass the startup before windows loads then the DOS screen is fine.

The video card boots with no problem, and with Windows using the "standard VGA" driver, the DOS shell has no problems.

It's not some sort of error in the program call from the start menu, because run->command does the same thing.

The screen, mouse, and even system (crtl+alt+del doesn't even work) locks up before the shell screen is able to show it's ugly face.

That should be pretty clear, I hope. I'm going to try an different version of the driver and see if that clarifies the problem.

I have the same video card with the same problem. It seems anytime the entire screen goes entirely black the system will lock. Thus entering dos, or if you try to run full screen winamp plugins like geiss. It really sucks, my video card also locks when I try to play video clips that start with a black screen. I don't know if there is anyway to fix it, I think the card is damaged. My card never used to behave this way before I had a little motherboard frying incident. I've tried everything I can to fix it, and have pretty much concluded I just have to buy another one when/if I ever get some money.

"this is a random shot in the dark!"

Have you assigned an IRQ to your video card? This is usually done fom the motherboard cmos advanced setup screen "assign IRQ to video"

Some cards don't need them, Some will work fine without, some will work intermittently without, and some won't work at all with out..

Just a thought.

When you say go into the dos shell, does it try to take over the whole screen? If it does, some of the older cards have trouble changing from one mode to another. Try finding your command.com, right click, go to properties, then to the screen tab, and make sure it is set to window. I hope that helps.

Yeah I did that when I first dicovered the problem, and it does let you use dos. Of course it doesn't solve the problem of trying to exit to dos....

I've seen alot of strange video card problems solved by moving the "hardware acceleration" slider to the left a notch at a time.

Yup win98 as well.. I still maintain this is not a configuration proble, but one of damage to the video card. I had 98 on my old asus motherboard. Fried that board with some ram of death. Bought the identical motherboard again, reinstalled same version of windows, configed everything exactly the same, except this time I had the problems described above. I think when the motherboard fried the vid card was damaged, thats my theory at least

I don't know a whole lot about hardware but..

I have had a similar problem with my system, but I'm not sure the vid-card itself is the problem. I run Win98 and My system loves to reboot in an MS-DOS box. It doesn't always happen right away, but definitely within a few commands. Suspecting a RAM chip defect, I swapped them several times, with no effect. And I've tried 3 different vid cards, with somewhat interesting results.
With a 4meg Graphics Blaster Exxtreme (PCI), the overall stability of the system was the worst. It crashed all over the place, even in Windows when nothing at all was happening.
With a 16meg Voodoo3 2000 (AGP), things are relatively OK in Windows, but DOS still reboots.
With an old school Trident 9680 (PCI) everything is pretty smooth. I put the Trident card in when I'm working on Perl scripts or anytime when I really need a command line for extended periods of time. But it still eventually reboots within an hour or so.
In MY case, I do NOT think that it's the vid-cards' fault, because when I first installed this system there was a problem with the cooling fan. The cpu got a little roasted before anyone could manage to turn the thing off. Add to that the fact that it's running some kind of unique build of Win98. It's got all kinds of funny quirks, but all the rest are completely random... the only one that it can perform on cue is the MS-DOS reboot.

I dunno.. maybe this will give you some more ideas.

Oh, and just to avoid some confusion,.. I have current drivers for all the vid-cards that I use when I swap them around. I'm not using the Trident drivers on the GBE or Voodoo... if that worked at all, I'm sure it'd cause SOME problems.
