Re: New 3D card or more RAM, that is the question.

Hi Kris,

128 megs of ram should be enough for most things you throw at it. I'd recommend getting yourself either a voodoo3 (2000 or 3000 it doesn't matter a whole lot) or, if you can afford it, a Geforce 256 DDR/SDR. The geforce 256 DDR has twice as fast ram as an SDR but they're both very fast cards. I have a lowly celeron 266 w/ no level 2 cache overclocked to 400 mhz & 64 megs of ram with a geforce and I get NO swapping at all in anything. Also, have you defragged your hard drive yet? If not do so. Then, if you have the space, set up a permanent swap file of around 250-300 megs. Only do the swap file thing after you've defragged though otherwise you'd have a fragmented swap file and nothing was gained. This should help. Check around on pricewatch.com or ebay for the video cards. You can find some pretty good deals at either place.

Yeah, I think I'll invest in a GeForce DDR, if the finances permit. Hopefully it wont become obsolete too soon.

Thanks for the advice.

a voodoo 3 wouldn't really help, because the tnt 2 should be faster already. if u want better, u would want a faster processor, that would be your best bet, ram would be last,

The system you described shouldn't have any frame rate problems if it is set up right. I would suggest that your system is in real need of optimization before you spend money on hardware. Your system, while not bleeding edge, is far from a dog.

You probably either have:

incorrect video drivers or video driver set-up. Or OpenGL setup.

Or, incorrect AGP buss driver setup (if your card is AGP?)

or a whole bunch of crap running in the background.

or maybe crippled BIOS settings, especially memory, cache, and PCI buss settings.

The optimal for FPS-games is to buy at least (!) 256M RAM, but 512M is much better. Try to get good quality brand RAMS, so you can use it later in other systems too.

Swapping is ALWAYS because of low RAM. Anyway, if you cant afford 1/4 or 1/2 Gigas of RAM, check the virtual memory settings, and make a BIG swap-file, the double of the RAM size is usually good enough. The swap will be in one piece phisically on the winchester, and its much faster than its fragmented, or Windows-optimized.
Fast winchester is recommended also, as the games recommended videocard-driver version.
Hope it help.

lol, you arent serious Baliquez, are you? any more than 128 ram, and it wont make good use of it, you wont really notice a difference.

Hey Ryan_100, RAM is memory. More memory = less winchester usage = better performance.
I use 2 work with graphic and 3D programs, and they are much faster with big RAM. Imagine when Im editing a 24bit A3 bitmap. And for game, its also nice too. Theres difference, belive me, or try it Yozelf.

i must really agree with Baliquez... games like quake III and UT use more than 100 MB of your ram.... absolute minimun for any gaming PC should be 192 MB... and that's ABSOLUTE MINIMUM....

I just reread my post, sorry i didnt mean to say that. It does make a big difference on some os's like win 2k. but just not as significant as 64 to 128 for example. if u want faster for games and stuff, i would still get a faster processor.
