CHEYENNE, WY?After attempting to contain a living-room blaze started by a cigarette, card-carrying Libertarian Trent Jacobs reluctantly called the Cheyenne Fire Department Monday. "Although the community would do better to rely on an efficient, free-market fire-fighting service, the fact is that expensive, unnecessary public fire departments do exist," Jacobs said. "Also, my house was burning down." Jacobs did not offer to pay firefighters for their service.

Most libertarians I know of would consider fire-fighting to be a legitimate function of government. Still funny, tho.

They shouldn't if it comes from their rightfully earned income. However, if it comes from a land value tax, which taxes that which no human being rightfully owns, then it is perfectly acceptable to use that money to pay for the legitimate functions of government.

The government will steal my money whether I use their services or not. Since I do not have the option of seeking the services of a private fire-fighting company, I have no choice but to use the services provided by the government.
As for the joke, I was merely clarifying the libertarian position. Nothing stung, and I found it quite funny myself.

Most libertarians I know of would consider fire-fighting to be a legitimate function of government.
i'm not one of them. there is absolutely no reason why the government should provide this service. it can be done by private firms.
if the water system in your home malfunctions and you have a huge water emergency on your hands, do you call the government emergency plumber? if your heat dies in the dead of winter and must be rapidly restored, do you call the government emergency HVAC guy?
some people, based on their home or business' proximity to others, could be required to have emergency fire coverage, but there is no reason why a person who lives in a solitary home who doesn't want fire coverage should be forced to pay for it if this person doesn't want it.

Not sure, but I think all the local fire departments here are volunteer. They may or may not get money from the government, I don't know, but I don't think at least most of the firemen are getting paid.

Two things, first, that is the funniest picture I have ever seen, other than those on www.despair.com. Second, a large majority of fire departments make their money from holding Bingo, or other fund raising events. The EMT squad that I volunteer at makes about $1,500/week in Bingo, and that is just one hall. Of course, it takes ALOT more than that. Also, EMT squads do send bills, and insurance pays for it. I'm not sure if firemen bill 'clients' for services rendered.

we've got a volunteer fire dept too, and they raise a lot of money through donation drives. i don't know how much funding they get from the local government.

Imagine how I felt reading all that bullshit you posted about "charity" curing welfare and third world employees being able to "sue" multi-billion dollar corporations. It was like debating with my 4 year old neice, only your replies wern't quite as intelligent.
