Unfortunately I can't say whether or not it will be safe for you to take psychedelics, roughly half of people with bipolar are absolutely fine with psychedelics and marijuana and the other half risk ending up manic. It's all on your body and mind as to what may happen so exercise extreme caution is you do decide to trip though personally I would recommend against it.

Agreed, we are not qualified to give this sort of advice. Sorry.

But I suggest you do some research about this topic. Your question is too broad.

Bipolar...

Really depends on the person and exactly what their symtpoms are and the severity of their issue.

Imo many "disorders" or "mental health" issues are not accurately diagnosed and over diagnosed.

Why exactly were you diag osed with bipolar? What were your specific symtpoms which led ti that diagnosis?

Just curious. I'm not "qualified" myself.

I have some limited knowledge, schooling, and experience in psychology

Ideally you would speak with someone both trained adequately in psychology who is also open and knowledgeable about alternative medicine and things of that nature

Again, whether you should ir shouldn't, whether it could be bad or good, is dependent upon you specifically, and your issues specifically

I'll add, imo I don't see why it wouldn't be considered.

Bipolar is not schizophrenia for instance. It's characterized by feelings of extremes. It's a state of depression.

Manic depression by jini Hendrix is a great song.

I've never gone to doctors dor my mental health issues.

It's possible I could have easily been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

I've used psychedelics heavily.

I've suffered from extreme depression in my life.

Imo mushrooms are medicine. "Mental illness" is something that again, imo, they are appropriate medicine for.

What is your reason for recommending against it? "Half of people are fine half end up manic" is this a legit statistic..? If so where is it from. What brought tiu to that conclusion? Or are you simply alking on the side of caution ?

If there is potential for mushrooms to help this person imo it should be considered and not shunned.

This is not a personal attack on you loph, but in general I see a lot of people on the side of "if you are diagnosed with mental illness don't trip" and I can't say I agree. All of the variables are not being taken into consideration by taking that position.

If mushrooms or other plant based osychedelics can not help with "mental illness" what is the alternative ...?

I'll add ine potential helpful alternative while I'm at it.

Diet, eating healthy, exercising, spending time in nature, reading, meditating, practicing mindfulness meditation (meditation) can equally be strong medicine.

If you are on medication for your bipolar i would do some reseaech on it and attempt to lower and ween off to none if possible.

My story:
I was diagnosed bipolar type 2.
I was on Sodium Valproate and SSRIs for a year. Did not work. I stopped taking it.
1 year ago I quit smoking, drinking, junk food. I took up regular exercising along with a balanced diet. Started going to therapy. I think it worked.

Advice:
Talk to your psychiatrist about weaning you off of your meds. Go to therapy, exercise, eat well, smoke a doobie. Then maybe consider small dosses of Psilocybin.

P.S.
I was wrongly diagnosed. I had massive bouts of depression. The "mania" was just me, I'm a pretty intense and unpredictable individual, some people did not like that at all...

Any specific reason you want to erase your fear of death?

I think that quality has been oversold a bit. After doing them, if someone sticks a gun to your head you'll probably still freak out and fear for your life. If you get diagnosed with a terminal illness, your world will still be rocked and you will be more than a little afraid of what lies around the corner for you. Lots of people do mushrooms, but I don't think there are a lot of people running around unafraid of death.

What it can do is smooth the transition, particularly in people already suffering from something terminal, but anyone can experience it really. It can help someone come to accept who they are and the life they led, while experiencing something so beautifully mind-blowing they get a taste of how little they know about everything, and how death may not be an "end" of anything. Not everyone gets that though, some just get a bad trip or see some walls breathe. A bad trip can also make you even more afraid of death and grateful to be alive and sane.

In terms of bipolar, you know yourself better than anyone. A bad trip can take you far lower than any depressive episode you've ever experienced. A depressive or manic episode while tripping could lead you to harm yourself or others. How extreme are your moods typically?

The research just isn't there, and any doctor or counselor would likely tell you not to do it. Ketamine isn't a psychedelic, but Ketamine therapy is available in a lot of places now and has had some great results with depression and bipolar. It's expensive though and not covered by most insurances, of course.

Anecdotally, I have two friends with bipolar who have tripped. They've both had good trips, and also trips where "hell" is too light of a word and the negative effects lasted days or weeks.

If I had bipolar, honestly I'd probably still try them out. That doesn't mean you should, I just personally haven't seen or heard about the same potential of a break that schizophrenia poses, especially with small doses. I would not dose high. I'd start very small (microdose, .1-.2), and work up gradually and only in an environment where myself and a sitter were completely safe. As other people in this thread have said, I'd also be aware of any meds I was on and their interactions. Any signs of trouble I'd stop or drastically lower my dose if they'd been helping at lower doses.

A lot of people freak out over mental illness and psychedelics, and for good reason. I do think though that future research will show that a lot of these substances have therapeutic value in a variety of disorders, it's all just dose and frequency-dependent. You don't give someone who got a tooth pulled 80mg of oxy, you don't give a child with ADHD 200mg of adderall, and you don't give someone with mental illness five dried grams right off the bat.

IMO, meditation is where long term gains such as a lessened fear response will occur. Lots of people have a mind-blowing trip and come out of it with a whole new view of life and the world, promising to change everything about themselves and live a whole different way, but it seems that many regress over time. I know I've been there. Jung's advice to "beware of unearned wisdom" can be applied in a lot of different ways to tripping, and the course someone takes with integrating the experience.

Self-reflection and immersing yourself in the present moment via meditation on a consistent and routine basis allows you to make gains while not even using psychedelics, and be more likely to keep any gains and insights you get while tripping. It can also help to a certain degree with bipolar, especially when combined with cognitive behavioral therapy, and the advice korgoth and Enkidu have offered above.

Pretty much none - I am (type 2) and have and it's all good.  Resets my depressive cycle to manic phase.

If your manic phase is something you don't want to experience much (type 1) than no you wouldn't want to do it.

I wouldn't bother tripping to "erase fear of death" - that's not a hard thing to deal with.  Just get a possibly fatal disease and recover, you won't fear death anymore.  Or more practically, talk it out.  Go bungee jumping.

I don't know the exact statistics, I based that off of my own experiences with bipolar individuals and psychedelics/marijuana. I will say that those who follow their treatment regimen tend to be the same ones who don't have any problems with them and vise versa. On that note if you are on lithium and want to trip, get your levels checked and stop taking it for 2 days before and 2 days after it interacts dangerously with lysergamides and tryptamines.

I think mushrooms could help cure some people of mental disorders, and I also thing it could exacerbate the effects in others.

Much like everyone else here has stated.

No one can tell you if it's safe to use a powerful psychedelic, but there is another thread around here where it talks about moving up in small steps. Tiny dose, then next week a little higher, the next week a little higher, and being careful.
