Safe or throw it away?

Hello all,

This morning I emptied the water from a pf cake which was having a dunk, before rolling it in verm and placing it in a very poor mans fc. However, i am slightly concerned my cake is infact contaminated (I have no experience with any contam so this would be the first)

The concern was only raised by the smell, a faint fresh mushroom smell but quickly over-taken by a sour(ish) smell. All over the little tub it colonised in prior to birthing and rolling, was covered in what I had identified as metabolites. Im no longer so sure on that.

During colonisation I noticed no stalling of the myc, and no early pinning. It might also be worth noting this was the only one I have done without a casing layer of dry verm. This was due to never achieveing germination and also not recieved any form of contam even within the 'fly trap' jars placed to observe working conditions.





Please drop a response if you think everything is okay, or if something looks diseased. Really irritated that i havent got a photo of the cake pre-birth with the 'metabolites' all over it. Thanks in advance.

Idk looks fine to me. A little bacteria isn't the end of the world, and unless the cake is visibly contaminated or smells bad itself. I would say its good to go.

Thanks for your opinion. I have read some information which encourages to fruit suspicious cakes (which have no visible signs of contam) seperate to other cakes. So with that, its inside its own fc and ill just wait and see what happens with it. Its the smell of the cake which led me to post. It definitely smells faintly of mushies but when comparing the smell to a different jar, I cant help but notice a significant difference.

I certainly will try fruiting 😆 as you say got this far! Ill keep it seperate to the other dozen, and post a couple pics here of what comes off of it. Thanks for the reassurances guys.
