Growing - is it safe for n00bs ?
    #3458857 - 12/07/04 10:55 AM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Hi all,

Forgive me if i'm out of line but i just have some questions regarding growing mushrooms.

My hunting this year (i live in Ireland/Europe) was chronic - absolutely NO actives found (liberty caps/cyans), so i have developed some interest in the idea of growing my own and considering this is such a wet country it could be all the better option.

I have read the cultivation techniques but i'd just like to know how safe it is.. is it easy for cultivated mushrooms to become contaminated ? Why don't they become contaminated in the wild?

Regards,
Flippy

It is safe as long as you are anal about sterility. The most critical times are during inoculation and colonization. Because at that time the substrate can be taken over by anything. Once fully colonized it can fight off most contaminents until it runs out of nourisment from the substrate then it is open for contamination. In nature, complex interactions among hundreds of other fungi, bacteria, nematodes, etc. maintain an ecological equilibrium. In a sterilized medium, the grower provides ideal conditions for the mushroom mycellium as well as contaminants to prosper. As long as you use your eyes and common sense and follow the if in doubt throw it out rule, you should be fine. Here is a link for you to look at to familiarize yourself with the common contaminants of the mushroom culture. GL http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23418

GJ mr clean, 5 for you on the post.

It is safe for noobs, considering all of us that have successfully grown were once noobies.

follow the pf tek to the letter the first time, then try moving to casings and then bulk. i'm getting ready for my first bulk grow here in a few days (as soon as my spawn jars finish, mmm mmm!).

the reason wild mushrooms don't contaminate is that they're used to fighting off contaminates to live. uv light and other factors also help keep the contaminates at bay...

by the way, england actually has some good actives that grow. did you hang out in the hunting forum and research exactly what you were looking for?

Thanks very much for the response folks!

I think i'm gonna give it a go, more than likely with the pf tek method.

AFAIK The only common actives around my area are cyans and liberty caps ?

Thanks again!
