40ft is too much.  A 12x8 shed will do 1000 5lb bags easy.  It's much better if you can find a 3or more hp boiler you wont have to worry as much about insulation on your container.  With a smaller electric steamer , even my 24kw electric boiler its hard to match the power of a gas powered boiler.

I know 40 ft is a ton but he's only got so much to invest at the start and has these c units on the property and easy access to more. The question is what would it take to heat and how would the efficiency compare to a smaller, more insulated building.

    I'll look into those boilers. I've never heard of them before your post. The way i pasteurize sub is in a freezer that i got for free off of craigslist. I put a heating element in the bottom of a metal five gallon bucket and piped copper out of it and into the freezer. It's setup such that i can control the temperature in the freezer and it works like a charm. I figure the same principle would work in a larger container but it'd take forever to build temperature with that level of steam input. Seems like those boilers are just a more efficient way of producing steam.

If you steam in a seacan you will eventually ruin it by melting the adhesive on the interior metal.  And the walls will peel off

hey drake, I'm trying to do some math (not my best subject) and figure out how much it'll cost me to do sterilization runs. I have access to a ton of solar panels and just need to get a battery bank built up. Do you know how much electricity it takes you to do a run of ____ bags at ____ substrate per bag?

I think you mean kiawe. spell check must've screwed you on that one. i found this on wikipedia.

"Prosopis pallida is a species of mesquite tree. It has the common names kiawe[3] (in Hawaii), huarango (in its native South America) and American carob, as well as "bayahonda" (a generic term for Prosopis), "algarrobo pálido" (in some parts of Ecuador and Peru), and "algarrobo blanco" (usually used for Prosopis alba). the point being that is a species of mesquite tree. That makes me think it'd work but I'm just learning about shiitake.

I had no clue that there are different strains of Shiitake. I just ordered a Shiitake LC Syringe too, I hope it's good.

technically it'd be different varieties or substrains but yeah, there are a ton. Just like with cubes, if you germinate spores from a fruit you've created a new variety.

where'd you get the LC syringe from? The vendor undoubtedly knows what variety it is and probably lists it on the website.

So, I don't really know if these are clean or not because i'm unfamiliar with the appearance of shiitake myc on agar. As far as i know it's normal for shiitake to thicken up after it gets hold of the substrate. Is that what i'm seeing on two of these plates?

There is no need for that is there? I know i'm supposed to do that with blocks but i can use the myc to start grain spawn before it does that, right? Does it look normal from what you can tell drake?

Yeah, I'm joking. It looks exactly like the photo you have pictured, with slight concentric circles forming around where the wedge was placed. Only 2.

It was clean.


I just transferred to grain while it looked like that, worked fine. Myc grew super wispy, but actually changed the color of the oats as it aged, from tan to a light brown, then to white mostly at the ends of the oat. As soon as all had myc on it, I moved to sawdust. Didn't wait for it to turn white. It grows fairly slow though.
