Shiitake blocks
    #974163 - 10/19/02 06:22 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

My shiitake blocks are beginning to pin:

They seem a bit deformed - I will post updates.

Hmmmm......they do look quite deformed compared to mine. How long since innoculation? I've heard that rushing a block to fruit can cause issues sometimes....

Or maybe your CO2 levels are high still?

I'll post pics of the block I current have that's starting to fruit tomorrow.

That must be the case. My friend is growing this strain commercially and he told me that after stripping plastic off the blocks high temerature should be maintained for another week or until the surface becomes yellow. Otherwise you get deformed shrooms in the first flush. (I'm not sure if that's true for all shiitake strains).

They should be tasty anyway. This is a problem for commercial growers. Such mushrooms don't sell very well

The caps look very deformed from what I can tell in the pics. Are you able to post a more recent pic to show progress?

I would speculate that flavour might actually be a tiny bit affected by the lack of caps....but that's conjecture on my part.

They're not getting any better... I hope next flush will be more spectacular.

I think I'd remove all the "primordia"....let the block rest for a week at least....cold dunk it....and cross my fingers.
