Re: My therapy dog/child/ best friend had his leg broke (Update) [Re: spirit_shadow]
    #25782389 -

Update my baby is home finally but not even close to being out of the woods and I’ll explain:

As always my fellow shroomites took the dark times especially when I can’t talk to someone irl and you gave great love, support and understanding and I couldn’t be more grateful.

Most people would scoff, it’s just a fog some may say. For me though he was up with me licking my tears away after many deaths and suicides in the family, when I took care of my gma with Alzheimer’s it was emotionally torturous and he was there giving me therapy just being him and that was a 7 year ordeal.

I developed PTSD after a horrific whitewater rafting accident and while he was at the doggie hospital or whatever it is post surgery it was killing me to have him there and we found out the reason he wasn’t doing very well was he has Addison’s and after trauma he needs a water syringe and they just put a water bowl there and he had a pretty bad broken leg
Anyway even tho he’s home they gave him tramadol and gabapentin and he seems to still be in a lot of pain. As a lot of us here know gaba isn’t REALLY a pain killer it works in nerve receptors but not much pain relieve I feel in that scenario but again I’m not a vet so I’m trusting them because we delibrately went to a very expensive place because he’s that important therapeutically to me and my folks love him like a kid too. So no expense was spared even tho we can’t really afford it.

So he is in periodic pain as with some of my surgeries I’d get bad pain out of nowhere and still do. But this dog is SO pure and loving it’s heartwrenching to see him go through it but I’m right there gently petting his head or scratching his ears when it doesn’t get him too excited. Me and my folks are having to sleep down stairs to be with him 24 /7 because he freaks out when no one is there and he’s constantly needing either food water or carrying him outside to go piss or shit. So it’s stressful and he’s not recovering much yet but I didn’t either straight after either of my surgeries.

Re: My therapy dog/child/ best friend had his leg broke (Update) [Re: cannabinated] * 1

Going to be another very long night, the pooch is having pain but sleeping on and off. We are essentially engaging with him and giving him belly rubs, ear scratches and “love talk”. It seems to have really calmed him down. Still he is 10 years old and he seems to be stable but having a real rough time with this. We also have to pick him up (when I say we I mean my folks because I can’t do shit due to my own recent surgery.

So I’m worried about how he will bounce back and be able to heal in the cast they gave him. They gave him an oversized one because his size was in the middle of medium or large so his broken leg in the cast is hard to maneuver because it’s longer then his other leg. On the other hand until they change the bandages we wouldn’t have an opportunity to change the cast because it’s simply be too painful.

My whole family and best friends essentially are taking shifts giving him undivided attention, food, water and love to distract him from the pain whenever he’s awake. Works for the most part but he had a metal rod put in his leg so he is just inevitably going to be in a lot of pain and all we can do is try not to hurt him when we carry him outside.

Re: My therapy dog/child/ best friend had his leg broke (Update) [Re: Mandarinfish]

So pup had to be back in the doggie hospital again because his wounds weren't healing right because even though we put plastic bags on his cast, it has been flooding in torrential rain here and apparently enough moisture got into his cast that now he had pus coming out the incisions. He's extremely scared and confused as to why he's there and it is taking a considerable toll on my mental psyche not having you my therapy dog and knowing I can't be there more than a few hours at a time.

They will undoubtably be able to dry and care for his wounds a lot better then we can but he has a four-day Hospital stay ahead of him. Again he is my therapy dog for my PTSD and  all my other mental illness. Not only that but im an opiate addict and we ran short this month with all the money we've spent (around 8k) so the only emotion coping mech other then my dog to kill the suicidally intense bad emotions and trauma. This has left me somewhat broken.

I don't expect anyone to really understand why this is so devastating for me but nonetheless it is and It sounds callous but my aunt's suicide didn't hurt me this bad. I did end of life hospice care for my grandma with dementia and eventually Alzheimer's spanning 6 to 7 years, 10-14hrs a day, 365 days a year and that is seeming like a tie for how much I'm hurting right now. It's much more complicated than that with me getting attitudes of my dog being my human child, him being their thru nanas deterioration, not accepting his  mortality at all, using him as my only real therapy etc. But I'm just in a tortured state right now even though he may be fine I'm not fucking okay. I will be when he gets better but until then it's ALL I can think about

oh man :frown: I get it as well. just stay strong and be there for him. worrying before there is a reason to only means you suffer twice.

edit: it sounds like he is in good hands, like I said there is no reason to freak out like he is dead if he isnt, know what im saying? it just adds stress. just try to keep positive, believe me im not the person to say this at all and its borderline hypocritical hahaha, anyway we are here for you too :shroomeryhead:

I love y’all. Thank you so much. We are having LARGE volumes of rain here so when he gets out today or tommorow we have to be SO fucking careful and find a way to keep his cast 100% dry in a downpour or else he has to go back so at least hes coming home but just not nearly outta the woods. Ptsd is a strange beast but at least he’ll be home soon.
