Every noob thinks adding misters/humidifers and a fan is a good idea. Good luck growing much other than ugly mushrooms and green mold with that. If misting once or twice a day is too much work for you you'll never grow mushrooms. Yea they take some maintenance, less work than brushing your teeth twice a day. Trying to automate this stuff with zero experience wont go well. Trying to automate this stuff with experience rarely does go well, and those people use greenhouses.

This is the feedback I'm looking for. And I've seen your name before, so I know you know your stuff. What's the difference between a mister/fogger and just hand misting? I'm only going for automation because I work full time and our 3 y/o foster girl keeps us busy. I am able to set times in minute increments and as many times as I want, and I can individually do it for the fan and fogger. So I do have the ability to be precise. But if a mister or fogger won't work, than its pointless. I guess my main question is then, what's the difference between fresh air from a fan plus a mister/fogger vs taking the lid of and manually misting? And thank you for the input.

Well there's that ive never seen this work but maybe a couple times in the last 5 years. It's not as simple as hitting a target humidity. Humdity readings don't tell you if the cakes need misting or not. Eyes can do that. 50-80% humidity is fine. We mist to replace lost moisture in cakes. Sometimes that takes a light spray sometimes it takes more of a drench. Programs don't compensate. New growers hear FAE and maybe hear X FAE per hour so think a fan can take over. Fans dry things out and FAE is already 24/7 100% automatic in any passive fruiting chamber by virtue of its design and the holes in it.

If you pull it off mad props but for some cakes neglecting them for a couple days in a sgfc is probably going to be giving better results than the misting+fan automatic chamber

You looking for just some personal yeild? Can grow shrooms right from the jar take the lid off put a baggie over the top. Mist every now and then like a houseplant. There's a guide in my signature. Easiest way to start w/ or w/o a pressure cooker

That's why I set up my live streaming camera on then, so I can get a first hand view of the cakes/mushrooms. Not saying I'll be able to 100% compensate correctly. And the fan is more of experimental. I've been keeping an active log of all my growing to see what's going right and wrong. If that fan does seem to dry everything out. I may try to use it as an exhaust fan to suck new air in instead of blowing. It also has an inn line potentiometer so I can adjust the rates and do it on a minute by minute basis. Everything at this point is experimental. And I know of course, "Refer to what's tried and true! These have been tried time and time again!" But the experimentation is all part of the fun for me. I went to school for science and I enjoy it. I really appreciate the input and help with this though. And I know your not for this design, but if you have any suggestions to aid me in the possible success of it, I'd appreciate it. It seems like all similar attempts I've seen are based on lengthy timers and inability to check it itftn real time.

I've seen the invetro growing. Seems to be positives and negatives to it. I was thinking about giving it a try to a few cakes. And yes, these will be personal yields. With a mixture over time of psychedelic and non-psychedelic.

Well give it a shot. Maybe my suggestion would be to start with neglect and move up from there. Do less misting and less everything and dial it up if needed. You might be surprised how little work and care they need. And make some in-vitro jars as a backup

Just keep us all posted here. You'll continue to get feedback, some good some bad lol.

Elastic tiger(elasticaltiger i think is his actual username here) is the only name that I can even think of that's done an automated tub and got good results. I think he did an air pump mono bucket

The tek has all these mechanisms built into it, which is why it is important following the tek to a T. No need for extra equipment.

Dude!!

I think this is a badass setup!  Props to you for using your brain and inventing this setup.

My suggestion would be to do some cakes in this contraption and see what happens.  I would also do a small shoebox and also put it in the contraption.  My guess is the cakes will dry out a bit but fruit ok.  Shoebox May be better.

I am using my elaborate setup ( similar) to yours, but Martha Stewart style.  Bodhi jumped my ass like you when I posted my exciting post about my setup...  it kinda deflates your sense of accomplishment a bit...

But...  tbh, my best fruits/yields are coming from my mono tubs that are not in my tent...  but like you, I am a stubborn Mother F’er and am going to still keep tweaking my setup to make it work better.

It’s super fun to try and figure this out, and the idea of automation should still be pursued ( I mean why not!!?  It’s fun to use your brain and invent stuff).  So don’t get discouraged, but also know Bodhi is right...  and my guess is in 6 months you will have a totally new idea and it will be based on your experimentation failures and successes.

Also...  most growers it seems are on low budgets or don’t have money to spend on stuff.  So when guys like you come on here with all these expensive toys, it kinda ticks them off...  especially since they have learned to do it while spending very little money...  but for those of us who have money, and don’t have time, the pursuit of enlightenment through experimentation and the cultivation of psilocybin mushrooms is different but all with the same goal.

Keep rocking your setup, and make sure you have a simple tek going at the same time so you can make sure you have some mushrooms...

Thank you SumFunGi! It's nice to here some reinforcing positive feedback. Of course, not saying everyones been negative per say. But it can be really discouraging for someone starting out if the first thing they hear when reaching out to a community isn't pushing to improve the build. GRANTED, a stern kick in the ass usually gets you moving in the right direction, especially from someone higher up than you! (Which is why I'm grateful and happy to see ANY feedback, thank you again everyone) I think a shoebox would be a good option. I've noticed the first places to dry out are about 4" around the fan and 1" from the outer edge of the lid. So the sweet spot APPEARS to be everything in between. That would be my only concern for shoeboxes in the chamber (although the shoebox setup itself should negate those dead spots a little).

I've been inventing and coming up with ideas my whole life, so to try and apply it to a hobby like this gets me excited. I am slightly dreading the next 4 hour experiment once I actually get the cakes in there and also once the pinning begins, since I'll have to do another close study. Haha I do also have another idea that I'm also excited to try along the lines of a PF Tek (mostly involving easy inoculation for beginners). But completely different in style and viability from PF Tek. It'll be another experiment but I don't quite want to release any details until I've tried it. Then I can say I'm the first (as far as Ive looked up). I'll call it King Tek. Haha My mycelium has just started NOTICEABLY today/yesterday in my jar "5" after 7 days, and all my other jars are started (I think) but not as obvious. Upon going through all 11 of my notepads, I see my jar "5" info shows I accidentally over injected jar "5" (My first time using a syringe plunger hahaha) So it makes sense it's ahead of everyone else. But I'm pretty sure I under hydrated all the jars which is resulting in a slow start. Learning lesson! So far I'm loving this whole thing and can't wait for the continued growth. SumFunGi, do you have pictures of your setup? I'd love to see others setup. I'm actually using my system with Amazon Alexa Wifi outlets and routines though the Alexa app allowing for minute by minute control of each individual outlet. I worked a 10 hour shift today and wasn't around yesterday, so I'm just getting to responding on here. Thanks for all your positivity!

I understand it has the mechanisms built into it. But the mechanisms require physical interaction with the setup, sometimes multiple times a day, which isn't always possible for a 40-60 hour a week worker, or for a person leaving for a few days, which is why I'm trying to create something, for the greater good, that can alleviate some of those requirements. Not trying to doubt the tek or assume I'm above it, just working on other ideas. After all, if everyone said "ONLY STICK TO THE INFO AVAILABLE" there would never be advancements or discoveries. Just the same results using the same methods vs the same results with different methods. The fun part of growing is all the variables and possibilities!

Here is a link to my journal which has my setup in it.

But what has worked for me is the cakes ( 8 of them are in a deep tub on the shelf.  The tub is filled with wet verm.  And the cakes float on the verm on aluminum boats.

I also have oyster bags fruiting in there, but they are a bit stemmy...  I’ll post pics in a litttle while...  which tells me my CO2 is too high.

My bulk subs were in my fruiting chamber, but I moved them inside where they fruited really well.  I’m kinda stalled out on them now, hoping for a second flush, but they may be kaput...  I have 24 jars almost done colonizing and am going to one large monotub with them.  And probably keep them out of the chamber...  until I engineer a way to get more fresh air in there...

I’m not giving up, just need time to get it squared away, and really need an exhaust fan..  I’m actually thinking of ditching the Martha, and creating a grow room where I have a 10 x 10 room insulated and air exchanges built in so I don’t have to micromanage a small space,  but can engineer a large space to grow whatever I want.

Keep me posted on how your cakes turn out.  I like all the bells and whistles and clever ways you have incorporated into being able to dial it in.  I think an exhaust fan would be better than an intake fan...  but that’s just me.

I just went through your whole journal. Very nice! It was enjoyable! I saw your Martha setup, and you had mentioned possibly being to saturated. I've read in a few different places that evaporation is a necessity, not just for contamination issues, but also for primordia formation.

A 10x10 area would be awesome, but with various needs from different mushrooms. You might have mixed results.

Do you have pictures of your aluminum boats on verm? I just keep picturing floating cakes in a seaweed covered lake. Haha And 24 cakes is awesome! I've got 10 inoculated, 2 that are going well, 8 thatre slow. And I have 10 more jars just waiting for spores in the mail. Speaking of, your spore print and syringe looked awesome. Spore prints in general are awesome!

That fan in my setup is an exhaust fan, it creates a negative pressure in the chamber and forces fresh air draw. I haven't really done anything in the journal on here (haven't really looked into it honestly) but I would like to make some detailed entries pretty soon so people know what I'm doing. Especially if it produces positive results!

Have you ready any of Paul Stamets material? He's a very well renown scientist and has been studying mycology forever. I just kind of found out about him (although I've seen material before) and he's got a lot of good information. His book "Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms" has good info and there's a free PDF WordPress if you Google it. It's a detailed 500+ page book. I've got some coco coir and cow manure on the way so I can do some bulk substrate next. I've also got some Golden Teachers, B+, and Z-Strain on the way too. And once my lions mane fruits, I can't wait to do some prints and syringes.

It get that your attempting to automate the process because of a perceived lack of time, but it doesn’t add up to me.
40-60 hours of work a week is a lot, but that still leaves you with 108-128 hours your not working.

Kids are a big time drain but if your working that much the little one is probably sleeping soon after you get home and she probably takes naps on the weekends.

You have time to build this elaborate setup

To program the automation

To watch the live feed

I’m not busting your balls, I am far to inexperienced with growing to be talking sh&@, but some of these proven teks really don’t take much time at all. Are you so busy that you can’t check it before you go to work for 2 minutes and then spend another couple minutes after work and maybe again before you go to bed?

Again I mean no disrespect, I have nothing but love for a fellow shroom cultivator, but it seems like your trying to reinvent the wheel. Although I suppose any proven tek was at one time new, different and there for looked down upon because it was unproven, but even if it does work would it be worth all the effort it seems to be to just produce as well as a number of far simpler, less expensive alternatives?

What ever you decide to do I wish you good luck and positive vibes amigo!
