help with growing san pdro growing

ok say I have a long san padro cacti
and I cut the bottom inch off from it obove the roots and planted that
will it grow
and will it grow at the rate of a foot a year becouse the origanile cacti was over a foot allready and past the tiny stage where it take a couple of years for it to grow a couple inches.
or am I at that stage again
or will it grow as if it was never cut
all the advice will be well appriciated

Did you let the end heal from where you cut it?

If not then you should pull it back up and clean off the end and let it sit in the sun until the cut end has scabbed over.

Other than that you shouldn't have any problems.
San pedro is very easy to multiply in such a way.

Most of these came from just 5 12" cuttings.

This is after only two years. The two largest ones were bought last year.

I really need to take some more pics soon.

what should I do
do I cut it let it heal and then put it in a pot or what
I have no clue

i am in the same boat as fee.
i just recieved a 9lbs - 28" bad boy.

am looking at removing 5 lbs for study,
but am not sure if i should leave top or bottom...

I would cut it at least two inches above the soil level. Cut at an angle if you keep your cactus outside so the rain water doesn't sit on the top of the cut and cause mold to grow there.

As for the piece that you cut off, you should let the end heal. It will turn a light tan color or the color of cork sort of. It will feel sort of smooth and tough. Then it should be fine to plant.

When you plant it, all you have to do is make sure that it planted with enough in the soil to hold it up or have something to prop it up until the roots take hold.

Another thing that you could do is to take a 6" top cutting off of the top and use the center cut to plant sideways like this one of mine.

It was just half buried on it's side. That's how I got it from the nursery. Just make sure that both ends are healed up.

The end that already has roots is fine to plant or leave planted if it already is. The cut end will heal just fine.

also if you have the money or the means, once its all healed up dip the cut in water, then dip that into some powdered rooting hormone, itll get roots way faster

Take your soil add appropriate amount of water, about to about half field capacity, heat it for 1 minute per cup of soil you have. Let cool then use for planting.

Okay so now you say you cut your pedro one inch above the ground/soil level. You need to allow both cut ends to heal over with a hard callus. So leave them exposed ot the sun so they dry and callous on that end. If you do now allow this to happen before planting they will rot.

After callus and soil prepared, you plant it only as deep as it needs to support itself. Water sparingly, and maybe even powdering soem rooting hormone wouldn't be a bad idea on the callus end.

It seems to me that it might be hard for the hormones to get transported accross the callus. What about dusting the freshly cut end with hormone powder, then letting it heal over? Then all the hormones will already be in there and it'll be just dying to send out some roots when it gets the chance.
I've never tried, but it seems like it might work a little better, in theory?

I am not rooting the large cut off onlt the rooted end
and I can not let it outside do to very cold weather
so do I just leave it under a grow light until it heals then root?
I am a total noob to cacti
I have a black thumb when it comes to this

I have two cuts... one that has hardened on both ends and another that has the top and a hard bottom.
Should I just plant both and water sparingly?
What soil (cactus mix) and what nutrients?
Also, I have a north facing window so I get little-to-no sunlight. Will this be a problem until I can just take the pots and put them outside?

Sure.

Commercial planting mix is okay if you don't want to mix your own, or you can do a sand doil perlite peatmoss mix, with some woodchips or something. Also check out [url="http:/www.cactus-mall.com/ccc/"]MS Smith's Closet Cactus Care[/url] for further info.

Depends if the Tip of the cactus is actively growing or not, though some shade is okay if it's still trying to root. So depends on how long it'll be until you can put it out. If it starts to actively grow i'd want to give it as much sun as possible then.
