difficulty breathing
    #25758781 -

hello. i have no idea what's wrong with me, but lately i have had serious difficulty breathing and taking full breaths. basically, it feels like i can breathe up to a certain point and then i just hit a "wall" where i can't get any more air in my lungs, and i feel like i'm not getting a full breath at all so i feel constantly starving for air. it's fucking horrible and i wouldn't wish this on anyone. i feel like i'm drowning and i don't know what to do.

anyway, i've been to a doctor. they did a chest xray and ekg on me, and said everything looks fine. they gave me antibiotics, steroids, and an inhaler, none of which seem to be doing anything. it got better for a day or so, and then today started getting really bad again and i don't know what to do to stop it.

has anyone experienced something similar? i would appreciate any kind of advice from anyone. this alongside a lot of other problems in my life have led to this being one of the worst weeks of my life as far as i can remember. i'm fucking terrified and i can't take it anymore.

Yup stop doing drugs and take up meditation and or cycling or running. Swimming too.

My father in law was having similar symptoms and was back and forth to the doctors. They kept telling him he was fine. Then he started to feel like complete crap and couldn’t breathe and all that and he goes in demanding they look harder for something wrong... turns out he was having a major heart attack that for some reason the doctors kept overlooking.

jesus christ

i've thought of getting back into cardio, shithead, but stories like this^ are a little discouraging. given the ekg looked all right i'm probably fine to go for a run. but still, i've been going for walks regularly and i get home feeling/breathing even worse.

Hey, I experienced that several years ago.  My research then pointed to something called Hyperventilation Syndrome. I feel your panic, it sucks to feel like you can’t get a full breath. I also felt like I had to consciously make myself breathe because I wouldn’t do it automatically. These sensations are caused by an imbalance in the oxygen and carbon dioxide in your blood caused by your current breathing pattern. The more you gasp and try to get full breaths, the worse it will get. The good news is that this will eventually pass. My suggestion for you is to quit or cut back if you smoke, and to get some moderate exercise like a brisk walk mixed with jogging. Sitting on the couch having a panic attack will certainly make it worse. Good luck.

Oh man, I have this same problem.  It sucks man, closest I’ve ever been to claustrophobic.  I usually have a slammed shut nose while it’s happening too so I figured it could be an allergy or some sort of reaction to something.

Usually I just have to do the slow drawn out karate master breathing.  Sometimes standing up will open up my nose, or going outside if it’s cold.  Usually the whole issue clears up in exact relation to my nose opening back up too.  I figured it was similar to how some people get hives for 45 minutes, my nose closes up and I get the Deadpool treatment while I have a panic attack.

I am assuming you are not smoking or vaping. Vaping definitely fucks with my lungs after a while. Also if you have been exposed to fumes of some chemicals you can get a latent type of chemical pneumonia. I made the mistake of trying to smoke weed using a candle, I inhaled a bunch of wax vapor (although I only figured this out later) and for a couple days I had symptoms like yours.

I would suggest keeping well hydrated, maybe keeping your environment more humid, take mucinex (Guaifenesin), and have someone drum on your back with their fists to help loosen up stuff to cough up.

The only other thing I can think of this sounds like is mold exposure. I lived in an apartment that flooded during a storm and then we had mold issues and my breathing became hard to take full breath. Could there be a source for recent mold outbreak? Flooding, leaks, etc? You could try staying somewhere else and see if things improve.

There ya go I bet it’s mold. Are you in the car everyday? If the roof leaks are the seats getting wet? You could have mold deep in fabric and foam.

Sounds crazy but try wearing a mask while driving in the meantime.
At least itll help you figure out the cause.

You need to dry the car out. Idk what you can do to treat mold except a bleach solution which wouldn’t be good for car seats.

Benadryl might help. Stop vaping (maybe get some nicotine gum or edibles to tide you over). Avoid that car as much as possible and definitely use a good mask.
The mold may be in the ventilation system so don’t turn on the air.

you're a lifesaver koods. still trying to test that hypothesis by not driving that car today and cutting back on vaping (which is fucking hard :banghead: nicotine gum does not really work for me)

still breathing poorly right now but we'll see how it improves. also trying to heed advice of other posters who said breathing deeply/gasping for breath only makes it worse. so trying not to breathe consciously if i can help it at all. i may call back that doctor and say i suspect it to be mold and see what he says.

i have never used this exact test kit, but you should test your car for mold, if you do suspect it's there, and would like to know for sure.

thanks! if nothing else it'd be good to confirm or deny my suspicion. the idea that i'm gonna have to drop a ton of money getting the mold out of my car freaks me out.

i haven't driven that car in 2 days and i think i'm very slowly getting better... not vaping either. day 2 no nicotine. if i end up quitting nicotine out of this for good then none of it will have been in vain

you don't need to quit smoking

just get the book The Oxygen Advantage, you're chronically hyperventilating and need to retrain your breathing pattern

i'll check out that book tho. i think it is psychosomatic to a degree.

update. been going on for about a month now. or just over that. at first i thought it was mold but i have been completely avoiding that car and the inability to breathe and pain keeps coming and going regardless. i just saw a cardiologist today and he had no idea what was wrong or told me that anyway, but they want to run more tests on my heart in a week. fucking useless doctors are. i can't go another day of this fucking living hell and they tell me wait a week and then we can maybe start to figure out what might be wrong  anyway, just wanted to update. if i find out what this is i'll report back. wish there was anything i could do to help myself. this is probably the worst suffering i have ever endured.

@user above me "yeah" i am looking at that book and will probably try and get a copy, but it looks extremely pseudoscientific and i can't say i'm holding out a lot of hope. i'm having a hard time believing this is psychosomatic though. it's a very specific feeling and a very specific sharp pain in the same place. it feels like something is in my lungs not letting them fill up.
