First Bulk, Bodisatta's Teks & Agar * 1

Sup everyone!

Been a long time reader but never posted as I didnt really feel I had too much to contribute.

Now with about 10 shoebox size tubs under my belt I'm starting to do bulk.
I spent a lot of time trying various combinations of coco/straw/hpoo/vermiculite and have just ended up at plain coco for my sub.

I have used Bodhisatta's teks for coco, Oats and his unmodified tubs. No doubt a combo of his and the rest of the TC's teks for
Agar


I have used 30 and 50 quart tubs for this first round and modified the lids with a bit of folded tin foil and tape to create a gap at the top for fae.
I started with 2 colonised jars of an aggressive growing B+ that had been grown out by a friend and I used G2G infront of Flow hood to transfer to 11 Rye jars. These where then left to colonize and I mixed 8 into the two tubs I have going now. The remaining jars where G2G transferred to Whole Oats in my SAB.

The 2 tubs colonizing should start pinning in the next 7 days, I'm not 100% sure though as I am not situated where the mushrooms are and cannot view them every day. I have other people watching for me but you know what they say about if you want a job doing right....

I am going to head down tomorrow to check em out and take some more photos but here is a snap of my
"clean room"
I just used quick Poly in my trailer to create a room. I then lay 6mm Poly on the floor and top of my wooden cupboard. My Sab goes on top and I work on my knees in a virtually still room.



My tubs at 3 days colonisation



18 jars cooked, G2G and colonising.



Looking forward to seeing them tomorrow, its been a week and although the reports back are good you never know until you see it yourself.

I plan to use AGAR to clone from this harvest and I will use 3 more jars of the grains currently colonizing to g2g another 18.

Shoeboxes are bulk technically lol... your subs are a bit thin, be mindful of drying... welcome aboard!

Maybe I see this as my first proper bulk as I Only pulled a couple OZ total out of the 10  spread across about a year!, riddled myself with issues via MS2G innoc open air And contamed sub before the first flush!
Don’t know why I didn’t properly read on here And consult more... no excuses just plain noob “I know what I’m doing/can figure it out”... insert facepalm here

Went to see my behbayyyyysss today
32 quart tub,  couple tiny pins in this one, a lot on the sides too, also some pooling at sides.  they’ve had the lid rested atop upside down but I guess the gap is not enough. I made gap larger today and left lid off for the 2 hours I was there. Removed excess water from the sides.


This tub also has a higher grain to spawn ratio than my other and is dry on top even though there is moisture at the sides. I can only assume that this is the cause for the side pinning as there was a more favourable environment for them down there. Bodhisatta runs no liner with no side pins but he keeps his tub perfecto!!! I’m gonna change to all 52Q the next run
The 50quart
This one is way better looking, although you said the thinner substrate would need to be watched I came into “the office” today expecting a dry ol bit a bacon! Oh was I surprised! :smile:
Pinning better than the other tub, when up close I can see tonnes of them :smile: :smile:
The moisture level was perfect in the tub even after 2 days of no mist! :smile:
As you can see from above I’m smiling from ear to ear
I will layer this tub thicker next time and see if It keeps up performance!
Looking forward to my return in 2 days time!
Also bought myself a media bottle, Petri dishes &  mini rounds.
Gonna try my hands at pour and no pour agar with different recipes outta franks book! I’ll link them when I start and snap photos!

Got a pretty terrible yield of 7oz dry from the 2 combined tubs... 2 flushes.
I was unable to maintain proper surface moisture as it was about every 4 days I could visit them, working in a new room testing the waters with environment control.
They both dried up quite considerably one tub sent all the pins below

I flipped it and it brought me some mutants :smile:


Super pumped to have gotten started with agar and that’s where I’ve been putting my energy.
Took some spore prints from the first harvest and put them to agar.
20 plates of ELMEY.  10g agar 10g extra light malt extract 1g yeast 500ml water
Prepped in a Media bottle with Gl45 cap and poured in SAB.
10 plates inoculated with  spore prints, 10 innoc’d with grains I took out of a jar I had fully colonized.
Both worked really well! :smile: I did have two contam but that was definitely my technique, a couple of times I let my arm drift over but o well  lesson learnt!!!




I had 13 jars of grains ready to go so I took 3 and g2g transferred those to 18 new jars and they’re looking fantastic! I shook a few to see wether it makes a difference. They where about 50-60% colonized
This was taken yesterday and g2g was done on the 28/1... 4 days... I’m pretty stoked


The other 10 jars that where ready I spawned to bulk.


Prepped 8 more jars of grain yesterday and did my first agar 2 grain... quite difficult to do it smoothly but it’ll come with practise! I found cutting it in a tic tax toe pattern and then hsing my loop to get it in the jar! I felt it kept my hands furthest away! I’m looking forward to trying the tiger drop on my pasty plates!!
Anywhooo got stuck in with a load  more agar... cloning, spore prints & grains!!!
250ml jars
Glad mini rounds
125mm
Testing the waters seeing what works best for me

Still undecided as I want to practise more with each!
Gonna head back on Monday for an update! I should have a nice lot ready for jars and a few more tubs ready to go!!

takes some experience getting tubs just right to get all top pins. if your gone 4 days at a time and drying maybe a concern use a humidifier maybe on a timer. even if drying happens you should still get a great top pinset maybe the corners wont pin as great. slightly on the dry side imo is better than slightly on the wet. and you can always add water later. but too wet of subs etc.. small pins side pins and all other sorts of stuff you don't want.

Pretty stoked, dialled back on my grain boil time to 35mins and they colonized much quicker. 7 days to full colonization after g2g. 4 are 85% done and I had to throw 6 because the master was contam, not that I want to replicate this error but no biggie I have plenty of jars! :smile: I have definitely improved my sterile technique tenfold Since then.
Yesterday I inoculated 67 plates.
A few weeks  back i chose 4 of the best looking growths from my original 20 plates.



I then took 4 transfers from each plate.
The growth was fantastic and a lot of almost no sector rhizo growth. I did however notice that they needed more transferring so I took 67 transfers from the 16 plates I had already isolated.


I have a selection of Pots to hold my agar but my fav so far are These
After 20 or so I had a good flow of opening and transferring while maintaining sterile technique.
I also managed to squeeze in 9  new a2g transfers and I shook my other 8.

Things I need.....
New torch... mine is about as powerful as lighting a fart and a ball ache to start one handed.
I borrowed  a friends dab torch and that thing was great but I wanna hear what you guys recommend??

A shelf in my SAB... any suggestions?
Don’t like putting shit down. Resting tools on top of quart jars is wearing thin. I did place tools in a glass of alcohol between use but I found this was creating more air movement trying to lift it out without touching the top of my sab. The SAB has a low-ish ceiling but  It was gifted to me so I cant complain. My next build will be larger, more in height than width but larger all round. Made out of plexi and I’m prob just going to have one large hole in the front. I’m no scientist but here is no reason why this wouldn’t work almost more efficiently. the Larger hole will create less of a vacuum when I am moving and provided I’m as clean as possible nothing extra should be introduced. Figure I’ll  do a run of 100 plates in it  to test, can always fill the hole later  (Giggity)
I’m sure there’s someone on here who’s done it before :smile:

Definitely excited for the next few weeks. Gonna be back in 4 days and spawn 3 more tubs.
My current two are doing great  both at similar stages.
Keeping a much steadier temperature and surface moisture levels are consistent, it feels good! :smile:

looks like you are doing quite well my friend. congrats. i use a chef's torch (culinary blow torch) and i like it a lot but i don't start it with one hand. i just hold the scalpel in the same hand that i stabilize the torch while turning on the gas and pulling the trigger. When i realized that it took two hands i thought i'd get a new one that didn't but it hasn't presented a problem and i've gotten quite used to it. But I'm doing all my work in front of a hood. when I'm using a sab i use my alcohol burner and just leave it lit (outside the SAB) for the whole session.

for a shelf in the SAB i use a freezer organizing rack. It's quite similar to the shelf you have all your pasty plates on in the middle picture of plates.

I turn the torch way down, just high enough to stay lit... I've got a push button nozzle and don't use it for whatever reason... will be making my first round of transfers in front of a flowhood later today... quite excited, as pouring the plates was a fucking dream! SAB is a thing of the past! Been using some sort of closet storage wracks... the legs are removable... one with and one without next to each other:



Definitely a game changer!

Perfect thanks, I just remembered there’s a second hand building supplies store nearby and they have tonnes of those grates!

I was placing my culture plates low right in front of me, and the recieving plates closer to the FH up higher... it allows me to see what I'm transferring without setting the lid down to pick the plate up,  and puts the recieving plates closer to eye level,  so I can barely lift the lid and still see what I'm doing... I turned the high one length ways torwards me and stood to work about halfway through today's 30 some odd transfers, with both plates high, recieving plates closer to the FH:  love the versatitlity... the picture above was just to show the wracks have removable legs, will work agar on the higher setting,  and do G2G on the lower I believe
