First grow, bacterial grains.

Hi everyone. Long time lurker, first time poster. I soaked up lots of information about this hobby from books and other resources, but shroomery is the best one. Great work, everyone. Keep it up.

This is my first grow and I have a big problem with my grain. 21 out of 24 jars contaminated, probably even all of them.
My procedure was Spores>Agar>Agar>Oats.

I have very cheap oats (5$ for 65 pounds) and they are dirty af.
It appears to me that all of my jars contaminated with the same bacteria. Symptoms: Sour smell, unionized bottom, doesn't look wet. Also when I soak the oats overnight they smell sour as well, and ph of grain water after soak is about 5.2.

I will definitely change my grain source when I find something better. But I want to get this problem down for good, because no matter how dirty the grains are they should work fine once PC'd properly.

My question are:

1. I have 1.5 quart jars, and I PC'd them for 2h first batch and 2.5h second batch, vented for 15min. I have large 12 gallons DIY PC that holds 12 of these jars and I wonder should I vent longer, 30min maybe?

2. My jar lids are polyfill stuffed and is it a problem that when I shake the jars grain touch polly?

3. Should I store jars on the side for more GE, since it's a 1.5 quarts?

4. Can I take a grain from one of the contaminated jars to agar? I have some myc on agar left, but I lost some varieties to this contam. Otherwise I have to go from spores again :frown:.

5. Is there is a casing that does not require pasteurization? Something with perlite/verm/coir, maybe. I'm too lazy :smile:.

Also my best achievement in this hobby yet. BEHOLD.

1. sounds like you could vent for longer. a little worried about a DIY pressure cooker, tho lol. put enough water in there.

2. it's be fine as long as your grains aren't way too wet

3. no. plenty of industrial farms use quart to gallon sized jars upright. you still wanna keep the filter from colonizing. quarts are standard though for that "don't put too many eggs in one basket" concept. they should still only be filled 2/3 of the way w/grain no matter what size.

4. no, agar to agar is different than grains in a jar. just because you can't see or smell a contam, doesn't mean it's not there. you can try, but most would say it's not worth the hassle.

If prepared properly, oats should not be an issue, assuming your inoculant was clean. Given that all of your jars were contaminated, your inoculant was most likely the culprit.

I think we need to hear more about that DIY pressure cooker. I'd bet that is the root of your troubles.

When I was new at this stuff (~20 years ago) I had a lot of trouble with contamination. It was all rooted in my pressure cooking. If your not at full temp/pressure for 2 hours+, you will have contamination every time.

Damn didn't even see that, if it's not a real pc then your definitely not getting those big ass jars clean!

Get you a cheap presto 23qt and at the same time get started with some pf tek just in case bulk takes a few tries.

Thanks for replies.

My PC is fine, because I get 1 bar on pressure gauge. Lid separated from main vessel with rubber gasket gets to 121C, since it's heated from vapor. Which indicates that pressure gauge functions correctly and everything is at full temp/pressure.

I think maybe I overreacted a bit, because oats right after PC smell sour as well. Which indicates that sour smell is a result of fermentation during the soak. I'll try no soak prep.

Now I think that they are just slow  because I over dried them oats. I prepared them so that they are leaving a few to none water spots on a paper towel. With a fan heater.

Jars are 3.5 weeks into colonization, shook them at ~30%. And the bottom is actually colonizing, but really slow. So now I'm not even sure that they are contaminated, maybe just dried out? It's pretty dry where I store them, because the room is heated with a space heater, humidity is only about 10%.

I'll get some pics tomorrow and calculate moisture content the grains.

Just boil your oats for ~40 minutes, strain for an hour or two (whenever they seem dry) and PC for 2 hrs. Don't forget to vent your PC for 15 minutes or so.

Even if you soak, a proper PC cycle will kill anything that is making the smell.
How many PSI is one bar?

3.5 weeks in??? I don't think your gonna be growing anything good with that now.

And if your not running @ 12-15 psi for 120-90 minutes, it's not gonna be clean like you want.
